Knockagh I wandered through the lanes and roads that surround our little town, through streets and paths to Knockagh, where I stopped and settled down. The sun shone bright the air was fresh it made the view so clear, Across the Lough to Scrabo it seemed so very near. I looked towards the city to where I travel every day, but strangely unlike Scrabo it seemed so far away. Looking over Belfast the Cave Hill steeply rose, and no doubt like me there's people up there upon Napoleon's Nose. The trees just off the summit stand guarding all around, against the ugly concrete of a fast encroaching town. But my gaze is drawn to Carrick with its castle by the sea, and I sit and stare and wonder at all its history. Not many years before this had I sat in this same place, But the lush green fields that I saw then are gone without a trace. Houses roads and factories like moss upon a rock Are spreading out and over with each tick of the clock. Further on past Eden a modern castle stands Its great grey ugly chimney a scar upon the land. Far off in the distance but plainly clear to see Are towers of a different sort THAT SWEEP DOWN TO THE SEA. So I close my eyes and look around with sight from years ago No roads estates or developments stain the land below. It must have been so beautiful for the view is still today, But in years to come how will it be when there's houses in my way. |

David, thank you for sharing the view of your home in the Emerald Isle! I too, have watched encroaching industries claim the beauty of my hometown. Lovely poem. Warm hugs, Linda |

humanity leaves its mark good and bad wherever we go...there are smarter builders, but if smart means expensive, I think the tendency is still for the quick, easy and ugly construction...have seen this while living in Europe [This message has been edited by ecrivan (06-29-2003 02:01 PM).] |

David, Seems this is happening everywhere. Thank goodness we have memories of when things were as they should be. I would love to visit Ireland one day. Thankyou for this. Chris "Said you'd give me light... |
