Does it matter to you if your child cares more about Santa than Christ? |

Assuming a child was, say, under 8 years old, I would be distraught if he/she cared more about Christ than Santa. |

Very good Ron. See, even the Bible can be right sometimes. |

Santa has never been much of a threat to true piety. He's a kindly old elf. Now the frostbite of crass consumerism and the fog of materialistic greed, that's another story! "Won't you guide my sleigh tonight"? |

No. It didn't. I tried to expose them to it all and then let them choose what they were most interested in. At almost 4 yrs old, my grand daughter has me driving past every house she sees with pretty lights. It's one of the reasons I choose to hang out with her most of all. It's all so very simple. I stumbled across this one quite by accident... Take Santa... Mix it up... Ta DA... You get Satan.. I must be honest I laughed myself stupid when I figured this out (small things amuse me okay... I will ignore the other half of that phrase for good measure). But I thought it was interesting anyway. Hugs And Kisses (That ending so beats Mwa... -sigh-... recollections) "Our Father who art in Heaven... Hallowed be thy name..." |

Is Santa really the issue or is the issue greed? If I had children, I'd raise them the way I was raised. I'd teach them why we celebrate Christmas. One does not have to grow up in a religious home to learn the "whys" of life. I'd teach them how Santa Claus originated. I'd teach them about the spirit of giving and I'd teach them how to receive gracefully. They would learn that the spirit of Christmas can not be bought on sale the day after Thanksgiving. We would bake for others. We would not ignore the bell ringers for the Salvation Army, hoping that lack of eye contact makes us invisible. We'd color in our Santa Claus coloring books and write letters to him to burn in the woodstove (funny how those letters arrive intact at the North Pole). If I had children, I'd assume the responsibility of teaching them to share what they have and appreciate what they are given. Oh! And I would teach them that Scrooges and Grinches probably just need a little love too. It seems the more lonely people get, the more mean-spirited people become. But I don't have children so I just smile at yours and say, "Merry Christmas" while I drop more money into the bell ringer's bucket. Merry Christmas - and don't forget to write your letter to Santa! My kids both understand that the holiday is a commercial enterprise. Both of them take full advantage of that fact. I'm the one who gets stupidly sentimenal... |

Essorant, Are you asking if there has been (or is) a secularization of Christmas going on? Of course there is. But for Christians, there must be a resolve not to go with the flow and remember Bethlehem in a meaningful way. Does that mean, however, that Santa must be hunted down like a fugitive elf? I don't think he's the threat at all. As always, its the motives of our heart. Stephen |

Steph, You asked if Santa should be hunted down... personally, I believe so. If you celebrate Christmas - I don't hence the if - should it not be about the birth of Jesus? Did Joseph or Mary give presents to him every year? Did he command his followers: "Let it be known that every year you shall grant me presents during the period of my birth!" I can't recall anything in the bible saying such. Does it not say in "ones day of death is being better than the day of one being born." As far as I remember the bible only states that you commemorate the Death of Jesus as a ransom for the sins of many, not the birth of Jesus. Santa/Satan... depending on which way you look at the word ... is just a way to get people to spend money and be beleaguered by commercialism.. But... er... yeah... anone wanna go elf hunting with me? Hugs and Kisses "Our Father who art in Heaven... Hallowed be thy name..." |
