Political Correctness (better sooner than later?) |

Before you consult a dictionary, what does the term mean to you? Then you can consult all you like. How much of this-whatever-you-deem-it-to-be figure into how you express yourself or even how you behave? |

Political Correctness is like grammatical correctness, just with a whole lot more "hypercorrection". "Hypercorrection means being so concerned with getting the grammar right that you get it wrong." (From Guide to Grammar and Style) |

I dunno. I'm just trying to figure out what everybody thinks it is, and possibly define it for myself as well. So does political correctness always have to be political? And Tomtoo--so you think that it is like, um, an "edit" function or re-write of what someone thinks to make what they SAY more palatable? |

SB: I think it is changing the way we talk about people based on a perception that the old ways are in some way harmful or degrading to those people. As with all perception, sometimes we are seeing things clearly and other times we are not. I think this is a great question, by the way. Jim |

Ever hear Larry the Cable Guy's PC version of "The Night Before Christmas?" Oops, I guess I should have said "The Night Before a Non-Denominational Winter Holiday." I think that pretty well describes the current hyperbolic political correctness. Lady-of-the-evening, lady-of-the-evening, lady-of-the-evening!. Get 'er done. |

Thanks Jim. I just asked myself what it means, and it occurred to me I wasn't sure. and mannnnnnnn...I thought I knew all of Larry the Cable Guy's stuff, but either I'm misfiring on the synapse, or that is a bit I didnt' watch ad nauseum while I was "in transit" during Katrina. (those blue-collar comedians were the only thing that we all agreed upon in that little cabin--ironically, decidedly, politically incorrect?) But yes, I think it's a good question. I'm so glad Ron thought of it. |

Tomtoo? You do confuse the hell outta me, I do confess. And I just edited this because I decided I don't need to explain why I started this thread. Let's not distract from the subject. I apologize for including Ron into this discussion. He'll join if he feels like it. |

Sometimes I think of it as a forcing of language or reference into the "taboo" category. This is sometimes good (when it protects), and sometimes bad (when it stifles conversation). Stephen |

Another rule[r] in stream-of-consciousness thinking. Which rather inhibits, rather than promotes, free thinking. But as long as I keep my free-thinking in my own head, don't put it down in black and white, and don't whisper it to anyone...why then, I'm fairly sure I'm falling within its guidelines. But you see, I still think the word "gay" means "to be happy." |
