"Death makes angels of us all
it gives us wings where we had shoulders smooth as ravens claws"
Jim Morisson

Does it?
What do you guys think?

I think death often romanticizes the deceased. The idea of the person eclipses the true person. JFK, for example, was a so-so President whose death sparked the birth of "Camelot".

I can't say as I agree with that quote. Yes, in dying we tend to have many of our faults forgotten, but there are those that even in death are not seen as angels...take Hitler for example or Ted Bundy or Jefferey Daumer (sp?) has death made them angels in your eyes?

Ruth, there certainly are sick people out there who would see Hitler's death as a martyrdom. Hitler may be seen as an "avenging angel" to a Neo-Nazi. I may be stretching the context of the quote (I don't know its context) but this would seem to be true.

Given Morrison's obssession with death, the quote certainly fits his style. Jim already said this but I agree: it is nothing more than the romaniticization of death.

To an extent, I agree: some are appreciated much more after they are gone. With others like Hitler, no, very few see him as an angel or a martyr. It all depends on the person.

I think death is a no lose situation really. When you die you die, nothing else. In that way there is no downside to being dead. If there is and afterlife it is good. If there is a hell it can only be as bad as a persons imagination and so could be sculpted to pleasure. Reincarnation is also not bad. Death makes winners of us all, it gives us shoulders smooth, where we had chips.
Of course I don't want to die or anything, I haven't made the world remember me yet.

SPRING HEELED JIM:

Assuming quite a bit there, don't you think?

"I think death is a no lose situation really. When you die you die, nothing else."

If this is true then I agree with you ... sort of. Agreed, if this is true then you won't care one way or the other once you assume room temperature. But it is only a no lose situation for the guy who is already dead. For the person who happens to be alive there is the potential to have very much to lose, even if the losses are merely sentimental or "felt".

"If there is and afterlife it is good. If there is a hell it can only be as bad as a persons imagination and so could be sculpted to pleasure."

I am afraid this statement rests on a faulty premise. What gnosis do you have that reveals to you that "hell can only be as bad as a person's imagination and so could be sculpted to pleasure." Sounds more like "Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors" than sound reasoning. I think you are begging the question here, assuming the truth of an unverifiable statement to support your argument.

"Reincarnation is also not bad."

Westerners have made the concept of reincarnation a good one. New Agers skip the Hindu concept of bad Karma. Being reincarnated as a dung beetle or mosquito is not an event I would label "not bad".

"Death makes winners of us all, it gives us shoulders smooth, where we had chips."

Death doesn't necessarily make winners of those left behind. No man is an island (pardon the cliche). Those closest to us are likely to experience loss rather than gain from our demise.

I could be wrong about all of this, but, regardless, I suggest you rethink this subject a bit.
