In his introduction to “Translations from the Chinese,”
Arthur Whaley wrote:

“The most conspicuous feature of European poetry
is its pre-occupation with love.   This is apparent not
only in actual “love-poems,” but in all poetry where
the personality of the writer is in any way obtruded.
The poet tends to exhibit himself in a romantic light;
in fact, to recommend himself as a lover”

How appropriate would this be as a description
of American poetry?

If appropriate, is the poem then a form of  author’s “personal”
as one might see in a newspaper, and to what extent
does it then enhance or diminish the writing as poetry?
