on SuccessThe only security in life is your own ability. Money is not the root of all evil. The want of money is. Talented people outnumber successful people a million to one. Corollary: Talent is cheap and meaningless until it is nurtured. There is a greater chance of being struck by lightening than winning the lottery. Corollary: If you want to be lucky, get a lightening rod. If you do what you love to do, it can't be called work. Corollary: No one should ever work. Good ideas make poor substitutes for hard work. Imitation is not the sincerest form of flattery. Getting paid is. The hardest thing in the world is constancy. Corollary: No one ever lost weight by dieting every other day. |

Money is not the root of all evil. The want of money is. I would rather have nothing and be happy than to have everything and be miserable. Talented people outnumber successful people a million to one. Corollary: Talent is cheap and meaningless until it is nurtured. What constitutes success for talented people? To some it's selling what their talent has created, to others, it's knowing their work is appreciated. I feel you have nurtured many a talent here - a fact that makes you almost revered! Is that your success? If you do what you love to do, it can't be called work. Corollary: No one should ever work. I like my job, my work. But if given the chance to support myself, I would make poetry my work - my life's work! And would love every minute of it! I've often thought it would be perfect to roam around the country in an RV, meeting people, seeing the beauty of America and writing poetry about it all. Like a poetic Charles Karault! Good ideas make poor substitutes for hard work. Boy do I disagree with this one! I am known throughout the company as an 'idea person'...bring me a problem, I'll suggest a solution! And sometimes, my ideas make work easier! Imitation is not the sincerest form of flattery. Getting paid is. I am not flattered as much as I'd like to be then! Could you tell my boss! The hardest thing in the world is constancy. Corollary: No one ever lost weight by dieting every other day. You have achieved constancy here. A constancy of fairness and creative talent that is seldom seen. |

Ron, Ron, Ron, I'm ashamed of you : If you do what you love to do, it shouldn't be called WORK. Corollary: No one should ever WORK. Good ideas make poor substitutes for hard WORK. I'm waiting for an explanation on this one. Brad PS(to Poet DeVine) coming up with good ideas (and expressing them) is a form of work. |

He-he, I love it when people disagree on something! I disagree a little there Brad on your last statement. Ideas can come in the form of inspiration which require no work. Like an epiphany, it "pops" into your head. To add to that, the development of those ideas are where the "work" come into play. I "think" this is what was meant by the statement Ron said. Without tha effort of developing an idea, the idea may become meaningless. For example with you ms deVine: You have the ideas, your co-workers develop them. The only security in life is your own ability. Ability is not a secure thing. As many people age, or are injured, or are changed by life, their ability changes, grows, is depleted, or is destroyed. Money is not the root of all evil. The want of money is Is it evil to want money to help other people, or to even satisfy yourself? I think that the "want" of money is only evil if it is to be gained by harming people, or used to make others suffer. IMHO, the want of money can be considered as a root for good, because the desire to improve your level of comfort in the world can spur people on to great things. Talented people outnumber successful people a million to one. Corollary: Talent is cheap and meaningless until it is nurtured. Everyone has a talent of some form, it just isn't always recognized. Million to one seems a small number. Talent is never cheap, because it inevitably means something to the person who has it. Meaningless and cheap are matters of value, and if one values the things they are talented at, then it has meaning for them. Nurture comes in many form, and I agree, that they need to be nurtured. But nurture isn't necessarily an outside force. There is a greater chance of being struck by lightening than winning the lottery. Corollary: If you want to be lucky, get a lightening rod. Is luck and lightning evil then??? J/K Good one here, and all to true! LOL If you do what you love to do, it can't be called work. Corollary: No one should ever work. That means in a perfect world, we would have many people who would love to clean up garbage, clear out the sewers, etc... And without working, how can you find what you love? Can you know that you don't care for something if you don't work at it? Imitation is not the sincerest form of flattery. Getting paid is. I think imitation AND getting paid would be the sincerest form of flattery! The hardest thing in the world is constancy. Corollary: No one ever lost weight by dieting every other day. Agree to a degree; Yet, without change, stagnation ensues, and constancy becomes a burden with the "reward" no longer worth it. Corollary: If a person stays with their diet every day, yet becomes depressed, they have only traded one unhappiness for another. All in all Ron, I like the principles of these ideas. And I always like reading your thoughts, because they flow so smoothly. I also want to echo ms deVine and say thank you far all the nurturing. Though it need not be an exterior force, it can be very helpful to have that extra support! Poet deVine said: quote: Of course what you really mean is that the implementation of your ideas make work easier! (And thank you for all the kind words - you almost had me blushing too much to respond to the thread ). Michael said: quote: And so, naturally, you had to return the favor! Far more beautifully so, I might add. I've never used a signature on the boards before, but this one would be my choice if I did: I don't want someone who'll just be with me, But someone who'll want to just be with me. Brad said: quote: Brad, these are supposed to be pithy and profound. Prose haiku. You really want consistency, too??? Christopher said: quote: On the contrary, inspiration requires the greatest work of all! It may seem to spring into being with a life of its own, but inspiration is always the result of unconscious forces and often the result of a lifetime of living. But I still stand by my original theme - even inspiration, until it is implemented, is useless. Christopher continued: quote: Nurture is never an outside force in the context used. Talent can be encouraged externally, but only nurtured internally. Thanks for the fun, guys! One of these days I'll learn to stop posting these darn things (so maybe I'm masochistic - sue me ). It is always fascinating, though, to see your interpretationsā¦ [This message has been edited by Ron (edited 09-28-1999).] |

Sorry, Ron. Who was it that said something like 'consistency is the crutch of dull minds'? I can't remember the exact quote. Brad |

I think it was "Consistency Is the Hobgoblin of Little Minds." Don't know who said it. But I prefer the one by Huxley: Aldous Huxley "Consistency is contrary to nature, contrary to life. The only completely consistent people are dead." |

The only security in life is your own ability. Corollary: Abilities are best used to ensure security. Money is not the root of all evil. The want of money is. Corollary:Money - whether paucity or excess can breed evil - Moderation breeds contentment. Talented people outnumber successful people a million to one. Corollary: Talent is measured from without. Success is measured from within. There is a greater chance of being struck by lightening than winning the lottery Corollary: If you want to be lucky, get a lightening rod. Corollary #2: If you want to remain lucky, don't stand out in a thunderstorm. If you do what you love to do, it can't be called work. Corollary: Work at play - Play at work. Good ideas make poor substitutes for hard work. Corollary: Ideas are only concepts until they are implemented. Imitation is not the sincerest form of flattery. Getting paid is. Corollary: Flatter me - please The hardest thing in the world is constancy. Corollary: No one ever lost weight by dieting every other day. Corollary #2: A diet is not a weight-loss plan. It is rather a life-long dining regimen...... |

(Money is not the root of all evil. The want of money is.) For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. 1Timothy 6-10 When this quote is written correctly there is no argument. |

quote: I would debate it, at least in the context of the modern situation. The continued presence of money as a center- virtually the center - of the human enterprise, basically forces us to pretend we need money to do almost anything, and if we are forced to pretend we need money, then we are also forced to want money to fulfill that "need". So, in that sense, I think the continued presence of money is more to blame - more the real root - than the desire; the desire is secondary and something we are to a great extent cornered into by the system (the money-system). |
