Is it better to remain silent than to speak wrongly? And whichever you might think, would that apply to actions as well? (Better to do nothing than err by misdeed?) (sheesh--it was too quiet in here--grin) |

It's always wise to act deliberatively - but there are times when both action and inaction may cause harm to someone. In such a case, we weigh the respective benefits and costs and act (or choose not to act) accordingly. As a general rule, I think we should strive to do the right thing in spite of the possible negative personal consequences - that is how I define integrity. There is a difference between acting rashly and causing another person harm and acting deliberately, but in a way the causes harm in order to promote the greater good. I'm not saying the ends justify the means - when our means hurt someone, we ought to willing embrace the consequences, even when the ends are worthwhile. Jim |

quote: For whom is it wrong? The speaker, or the one who will receive the message? Same goes for actions. And, over what matter? You see, I've been known to suffer from foot-in-mouth disease, despite my good intentions. I need specifics! LOL... |

Not exactly, Chris. If Serenity was to restate the question "Is it better to remain silent than to speak rashly?" My answer would be an emphatic "yes." |

I'll be back afterwhile to clarify a bit what I was getting at. I have to find the book, and THEN the quote that prompted the thought... wish me luck. This place is badly in need of the dewey decimal system. |

Depends on whether or not saying anything will actually improve the outcome for any of the parties involved... if it's just bi.. um... nagging -- no. If it might present a solution -- def. If it might present education then it depends upon to whom one is speaking/writing and how much energy one wants to expend. |

i take the "easy" way out on this one... i strive to do what doesnt harm myself or someone else (which means i put loads of thought into everything i do)...but i will still make mistakes, say the wrong things, do the wrong things...but...kamma will take care of the tally (be sure of that). sometimes we dont know we are doing the "wrong" thing..therefore, we cannot ask ourselves "should we do this or not" ya know? |

I remember once when a made a deliberate choice to take advantage of my anger. I knew it would give me more courage. I miscalculated the stupid factor. My public apology, the next day, matched my public display. I think Janet Marie's dad was pretty right! If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again. |

Yeah, but sometimes, some people have just GOT to be told. (later you can worry bout the consequence) p.s, but I guess it just depends. The clouds never expect it when it rains, but the sea, changes colour, but the sea, does not change. ~Stevie Nicks~ |

Don't know if this applies exactly, but seems to be speaking of similar situations? "Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace. When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive" (Proverbs 17:28) "A fool has no delight in understanding, but in expressing his own heart" (Proverbs 18:1) "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back." (Proverbs 29:11) There may be some wisdom in these everyone (including, not the least, myself) could glean. Stephen. |

Here's one that's a little more comprehensive ... "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven ... a time to be silent, and a time to speak" (Ecclesiastes 3:1,7) I guess that means that it would depend, wouldn't it? No universal rule ... just discretion. Stephen. |

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out, and remove all doubt. Abraham Lincoln Love that! I had tons of friends in school and I truly believe it was because I was a good listener. Little did they realize I was biting my tongue. Now I am afraid I do speak my mind and do whatever feels good to do, as in the end I have to face me each day for my actions. I have two sayings that rule this though, one is, "I start where I want to finish," and the other is, "Will I still be bugged by this next year?" If the answer to the second is yes, then darn right I speak up, and take action, if not, it is "small stuff" and I just let it go. This is the Sharon Philosophy and it works for moi. Descretion is the better part of valor they say? |

damned if you do, the same if you don't sometimes, silence is worth it's weight in gold ???? so, does that help any? 'prolly not' I have been told I talk too much but I've also been told I don't stand up for myself and speak out when I should so go figure as long as you speak the truth, Ser, you cannot feel guilty about what the listener hears |

Okay, here is the quote that brought on the question-- "If we have a lack of desire or lack of will to act we will (then) forfeit our evolution. The person whose desires are so feeble that he believes in peace at any price and gives up his will to anyone who cares to wrangle with him, is a good example. That is not noble at all. It is only feebleness of desire or lack of vitality. TO DESIRE BADLY IS BETTER THAN NOT TO DESIRE AT ALL." Well, that's what got me started thinking--this put me at odds with myself for personal reasons, and yes, there's more, and forgive me for the "hit and miss" of this--it's not very well thought out--just an excerpt of something I've been reading while I sit in front of a fan cooling off these long hot summer daze. (Oh crikey, it ain't summer yet, huh?) sigh. And yes, I'll reveal the source of the quote. Later. That's okay, isn't it? and stephan, hugs...I'm catching up to catching up with you. Your hotsauce is a hit with the friends and family! (more about that later) hugs all. I'll be reading replies with interest soon. |

Serenity, I'm glad "Y'awl" are enjoyin my fiery sauce. To say it's a hit in Louisianna (sp?) is an honor indeed. I still think that the Habenero is the only original fruit (except maybe for that knowledge of good and evil one) that managed to survive since Eden. They are heavenly to me. Stephen. |
