Brad tickled a memory of this by Nikos Kazantzakis, the Greek poet and novelist: quote: If we draw ourselves from the human scabbard -- what is next? |

LR, No offense attended, but I keep thinking of Buffy's musical. "Where do we go from here?" Curious if you've read Sterling's "Distraction" Perhaps, the next step is becameral? |

Well I don't know why I would be offended... I think Kazantzakis begs a little, um, derision... What passed for being deep and esoteric in the sixties looks a little pretentious and melodramatic in ought-four... if not a lot... But, no, I haven't read 'Distraction' -- probably for the last decade or so I ingest my fiction via movies or television -- most of my reading goes into research, education, news, or net-poetry.. But, from what I've heard about it -- it's about the political art of spin... Is it your contention that the ability to shape the truth into whatever we want it to be is a characteristic that will be emphasized through natural selection? Hasn't it already been? I'm not sure what the context is of your reference to the next step being bicameral? Expound please? Looking at just some basic steps in evolution though -- the study of canine genetics has shown that the domestication of that species also resulted in changes in the human race -- about the time the agressiveness was bred out of the early cousins of wolves it also seems to have diminished in humans and we became more gracile -- was this because our proximity to a somewhat symbiotic 'protector' species permitted it? The same studies also show that dogs understand human social situations/cues even better than our nearest genetic cousins -- chimpanzees... Looking at the changes in environment, education, technology, and the move from rural/agrarian society into city/techno cultures -- I think it's a curious question -- what are the traits that will begin to dominate as we develop further -- or -- will we all regress into Jerry Springer guests? Just looking at the American Television/Prosperity generation and its resulting pandemic obesity problem -- will we develop into blobs or will our genetics learn how to handle the land of plenty -- if it does -- what would happen to the genome if a time of calamity did strike? |
