Here's a question that everyone has a different opinion on.... When did the world start graying?

Let me say it a different way... Why is it nowadays, people complain about violence on TV, cigarettes, etc.; and at the same time want to legalize marijuana, allow concealed handguns to be carried, etc?

I have my own viewsd on this( I don't care either way... Let the world fall to pieces, leave it to the cockroaches). Anyhow, just what in the world is going on out there?
Why is it that the sides are not black and white anymore. There's no definitive boundaries anymore. It seems like if someone can rationalize something down, they can MAKE it good or bad as they see fit. And there are always at least 4 sides to any argument. What's up?

I guess I can't ask the question anymore direct than: When did the world start to gray?

I'll answer 2 ways: The world started graying two days before I bought my first bottle of Miss Clairol!

Actually, history repeats itself! You will see 'gray' periods throughout history. We tend to be restrictive, then loose, restrictive, then loose...now we're in a loose era..wait til the Millennium!

LOL@PdV!!! Miss Clairol... lol

Darquewing, I thank God that there are no more definite boundaries, if there ever were any to begin with. Perhaps the entire concept comes down to this: We have an easier time convincing the open-minded people to sway their opinion to our fashion? I would like to think that people making an issue good or bad as they see fit is a wonderful thing. It reminds me, personally, that I am entitled to my own opinion, just as everyone else is entitled to theirs.

Also, as for the world starting to gray, I have to agree with Poet deVine... History does repeat itself, though it's hard to understand just why that is. I feel that the purpose of history is to learn of mistakes made in the past and then learn from them, so they may not be repeated. However, those mistakes are repeated, and honestly, I don't believe there's anything we can do alone to change that. We can, though, join together and try to make the world a better place. You know... (Give Peace a chance..." and all that jazz...

And now I'm at a loss for words...

I'm not sure that graying is happening anymore now than it ever has... on issues that you mentioned for examples there seems to be more clarity than before, albeit a shift in societal opinion, but a clear shift.

Used to be that drinking and driving was a not nice thing to do, if you did it and killed someone you usually got 2-3 months jail time for manslaughter. Now there is clear societal thought on that issue and on drinking in general.

Cigs and joints: Smoking used to be accepted and encouraged and pot was a big no-no, now views have shifted, cigs kill and are bad, and pot has medicinal value (which it always has had).

I think the grayness comes in the the form of accepted behavior. Now it is no longer clear on acceptable forms of discipline for our children, and acceptable behaviors in public of those same undisciplined children. Spank your child, go to jail... then you get the blame when your child commits a crime.... am I rambling yet.....

Well, I think the graying happened alongside colorful, ugly fashion. I.E, the sixties and seventies. Now the sixties were pretty cool, but the seventies will go down in history as being the ugliest decade in the history of mankind. And now all them there 'boomers' are joining weight-watchers and hair club for men...serves em right.

Okay, I got a lot of good replies, but let's put it another way. I can see how people's opinions have turned gray.

How about tolerance? I mean everyone saw the Waco thing. Heard the OK city blast, saw the LA riots on TV(or out there window, depending on location), but why is it now, all peole can do is look at it and go ,"that's terrible" but that's it. It's like our mind has been numbed against such things.
Mine being one of the foremost, but personal beliefs on death and tragedy, are a big part of that.

Now everything slides.... I'm not sure if I'm saying this right, or if I'm just sounding stupid. The only translation I can put is: Why did humanity go from marauding barbarians to high-tech civilized people to high-tech marauding barbarians?
( I'm not complaining really. I'm an advocator of chaos in my own small way, but I would like to know current reasoning behind why it happened at this stage of evolution.)
