According to Galen, there's four kinds of humours: bodily fluids - blood, black bile, yellow bile, and phlegm. Correlated to these are four basic kinds of temperament - sanguine, melancholic, choleric, and phlegmatic. Is this still true? Much of Galen's knowledge of medical science has been disproven. But his influence on medicine cannot be overstated. He was a prolific writer on medical science, and seemed to soar above the status quo of physicians that came out of ancient Greek culture. His medical knowledge was definitely "state of the art", since it was a good representation of what was currently known in the scientific world. As to any true correlation between body fluids and psychological traits, there isn't ... at least in such an over simplified form. Surely disease which affects these products of the body, also affects the mind, but not in any way as Galen described. This, in my opinion was Galen the philosopher trying to provide a schema which would neatly unite psychology with human physiology. It's not true really, but it was a great theory which showed insight. From what I have read, Galen was a highly intelligent, cantankerous and controversial personality in his field. Stephen. I think the study of temperaments is fascinating and useful. Many corporations place much credence in temperament profiling. An interesting website: http://www.advisorteam.com/user/ktsintro1.asp Galen's theories are interesting, but much improvement has been made in personality profiling. Many of these tests are surprisingly accurate. I recommend that you give the temperament sorter at the website a try and see for yourself. Jim |
