I'm glad for your upbringing of that subject. I think life is more like a struggle of the soul to prove itself worthy of God, or as Christians believe, to let Jesus into their hearts. Life (not life everlasting) is a realization of both good and evil, which's just as interesting.. fruit from the tree of life was meant to let man live forever. I believe after the banishment from the Garden of Eden, after the forbidden fruit of good and evil was eaten, life led to death. Maybe because sin inherited death, then life involves an attempt to break free of sin (death everlasting), somehow... what do you think? Just a penny thrown in for your thoughts. how about a non religious one? life is it, life is what you get, but life is unique. the aim of life is to leave the best part of you behind. Be it in the form of a child, an idea or a poem. so you make the best of life whilst it is here, and help everyone make the best of theirs too. |

The meaning of life.... Hmm.. how can one answer that? What is the meaning of life... Hmm... Well... What's the meaning of stars? What's the meaning of dirt? What's the meaning of energy? What's the meaning of physics? Now... First I'll address a common comment that comes to cirtaint people's minds... This reguards the answering a question with a question comment. I disagree with this remark completely... Asking questions in response to questions requires the person with the question to think, and possibly draw parallels in the questions and eventually find an answer for themselves. In the questions I asked, I was trying to prove a point. The point being that "What is the meaning of life?" is just as answerless as the questions above. Which came first? The chicken or the egg? Why was it the chicken and not the egg? Why was it the egg and not the chicken? Why either of the two? Okay, now that I've torn down the whole "What's the meaning of life?" question pretty well... Let's ask some better questions. What does your life mean to you? What does your life mean to the people who care about you? Do you like the life that you have lead? Have you made a difference in the lives of others? Have you enjoyed life? Answer these questions, and work towards being able to give the answers that you want to give. All I know for sure is that life is meant to be lived. I had started to formulate my own reply to this question, and then I read what Sage had written. The meaning of life is whatever it means to you, and it is just there to be lived. |

Well, well, well... what is the meaning of life, eh? First off, let me reassure Sage that answering a question with a question is just rude . Your point as to why you did it was well made though.My question is: Why does life have to have meaning? When we go on a trip, does it have a meaning, or is it just a journey? Instead of rehashing a point, I will simply refer you to my other two posts in this forum - they explain my thoughts on the subject pretty well. ------------------ Yesterday is ash, tomorrow is smoke; only today does the fire burn. The meaning of life, I believe, is to know your Self--not yourself. There is a vast difference. This world is transitory and is always composed of dualistic forces. The Self is eternal and absolute. I don't believe that we live one short meaningless life and then simply go to a harp filled heaven or a cruel burning hell. The earth is like a vast schoolroom where we are learning(or not learning) many lessons. Our own personal evolution determines the grade we are in. The ultimate attainment(or as Christ said,remembrance) is reunion with God, the Ultimate Verity. We are all peninsulas of the One Great Continent. We appear as seperate islands only until the waters of ignorance recede and it is evident that there is only one Landmass. It may take many incarnations until we reach Divine Realization. I would like to note here, by the way, that reincarnation was a part of the Christian doctrine until the second council of Constantine decided that it afforded people too much time to be good and decided to scare the people into behaving by declaring it a heresy. I would also call into question the whole hell deal. How could a God we are taught is all loving ever be declared to be the same One who, if we mess up in our ignorance, casts us into an eternal agony of excruciating suffering in hellfire?! This is not a God of love but of unimaginable cruelty. I know the Ultimate Verity IS love and joy and I could never subscribe to being forced to love anyone or anything out of fear. These are man made precepts based in the ignorance of the dark ages that need to be re-evaluated. Shakespeare said, "There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy Horatio." Christ said, "Seek and ye shall find. Ask and ye shall receive. Knock and the door shall be opened unto you. All of these things shall be brought to your remembrance." When the yearning to know the truth of our existence becomes so strong that it stays daily in your consciousness then the right things begin to happen to bring you to that ultimate state of realization. In my own life I have found that meditation and heartfelt prayer, with no intermediary, (priest or preacher), to confuse what is a very simple thing--a heartfelt relationship between me and my Creator--works best. I have no doubt that if you go into a private place in complete faith and trust and pour out your heart in love and yearning to God(however you conceive of Him) casting aside all doubt and fears of the various religions threats, you will get the answer that you are looking for and that none of us here can give you. The true relationship with God is so very sweetly personal and far above any dogma and religious narrowmindedness. Good luck to you and don't give up the search. Stand fearless on the shores of truth and love and never be dismayed by others negative remarks or fearful, self-serving attitudes. Cling only to Him. ------------------ lenny |
