The values of the young generation are perceived to be different from those of earlier generations. admittedly, this is for a school paper..  but i am curious..do you find this an overgeneralization or is there a basis in the statement above? how do i go about attempting this question?thanks in advance |

I think there has been a marked change in values overall for the this younger generation, but I also understand that I was raised a lot differently than most of my fellow peers. That having been said, I think the most damaging enemy to values have been the legal system. Many states instituted laws which, in essense, tells a teenager that they will not be held personally accountable for their actions, and that the repurcussions of their actions while a teen will be wiped away when they turn 18. They are given a clean slate, irregardless of whatever crimes they did (so long as the laws broken were not Federal). And so the cancer spreads. If a person is not held responsible for major actions, minor actions will be totally ignored, right? Other factors, at least in my opinion, include the rise in power of Child and Protective Services, the weakening of schools to inforce discipline without being sued (didn't the teen and parent sign a paper, a contract, allowing the school to discipline a pupil for breaking school rules?), and the sue-happy culture of the late 70's and most of the 80's. And where to children get their values? From us. (as parents, as schools, as a society) Those who complain of lack of values are generally those who embrace the factors that lead to the lessening of morals. In simplest terms, we have switched from a society based upon responsibilty for one's actions to a therapeutic model. We must assure ourselves that our children feel good about themselves. One of the primary focusses of our educational system is to ensure our children avoid any event that might harm their self-esteem. We have to some degree succeeded. We have children who can commit unthinkable acts, but at least they feel good about themselves while doing them. We need to look no farther than ourselves to see the problems of the next generation. As a side note, the positive of each generation clearly outweighs the negative. For every child on the six o'clock news, there are thousands of responsible and capable young people for whom we should stand and applaud their successes. The juvenile justice system cannot solve the problems of society. Society must solve the problems of society. |
