I have a question that I hope a few of you will give your opinion on! How would you define slam poetry? I have been told that there is no such thing as slam poetry, it's just any poetry read, that entertains or moves the audience. I was told that it can be traditional poetry or rant poetry. I believe there is a difference between a traditional poetry reading and A slam poetry reading, both in content and in approach. I have attended and participated in both. Could I have somebody's opinion on this? Is there no such thing as slam poetry? |

Difficult to say Romy. While a Poetry Slam is just a reading -- with the intent of winning -- I'm inclined to agree there is a brand of rant that could be called Slam -- and I generally call it that. I think it may be some time before the clear hallmarks of a 'slam' poem are known though - if ever. Good question though. |

Well, from what I know of it, Slam Poetry is a contest where the poets extemporize spontaneously, either based off judging criteria and subjects, or based off of what the other contestant created. But there is another form of Slam, where the intent is to insult the other person to such an extent that the opposition is incapable of rebuttal. |
