i have a stupid question for all to answer. Actually I would be quite satisfied with one answer from someone honest and someone who knows. Do the people on this site not comment on poems when they don't like them? just wondering... mia |

Well, Mia, I certainly can't answer for everyone.... but as for myself, the answer would be "no". There's a LOT of poems being submitted on these forums... Geesh, did you check out the number of members? I think this says a lot about the number of people who love to read & write poetry which is a VERY good thing. There's a lot of talent here, as well. I, for one, find that I just don't have the time to comment on many poems. If I post one, I try to at least respond to 2 or 3. Sometimes, I have constructive criticism about a poem because I don't think it is as good as it *could* be. Other times, I only comment with a positive statement. I think I know what you're getting at, though.... correct me if I'm wrong. Does it make you feel sort of slighted when you don't get any responses or maybe only 1, yet others are getting 7, 10, 12 responses? I know I feel the same way sometimes and I have to stop and say to myself, "Self.... that's ridiculous. Don't feel slighted because you didn't get any responses. Maybe your poem wasn't even read." What I'm trying to say is, PLEASE don't let the lack of responses or minimal number of responses discourage your writing. We all want attention... that's just human nature... and it feels good to get positive comments from your peers who are also struggling writers.... but geez.... there's so many of us here. Write, write, write.... and post, post, post... ALSO.... VERY IMPORTANTLY... I suggest responding to others as much as you can. That way, those people who you are responding to get to know your name and get to know YOU and will more likely respond to your poetry in the future. ;-) dp |

I agree wholeheartedly with dp on this matter. Most of the time, the lack of responses (at least in my case) is because there are just too many poems. And yes, it does make you feel a bit slighted when you receive no responses. So, I think that people should try to respond to the poems with zero or only a few resposes. And go back and pull up some of the older ones that got forgotten in the shuffle. I have been trying to do that lately. Thanx.  ------------------ *Krista Knutson* |

Wanna hear a secret? The best poem I've written in say oh a month was buried under in an archive box ten minutes after I posted it. Go figure. |

Mia, I agree with everything Doreen said. Plus, I think I would caution everyone to remember that the forums are still very much in an infantile state, searching I think for their real personality. I suspect we'll see a lot more diversity in the responses as we begin to mature and everyone gets to know each other better. And while I agree with everything Doreen said, I especially agree with her parting advice. The best way for everyone to get to know each other is to respond, respond, respond. I can just about guarantee that if you post a very thoughtful and meaningful response to someone's poem, that poet is going to remember your name. And read your work. And respond in kind... Hope that helps? Ron p.s. Nan - I'm guessing, but the poem Racoon mentioned was probably Invocation of Melpomene. And it was, indeed, one of his best. And if it disappeared into an archive ten minutes after being posted you know which forum it was on (hint: not this one ). |

Mia, when I log on and see a page full of new poetry I sigh, as it will take forever to read everything. If someone posts 3 or 4 poems in a row, I will try to read one.. I choose by title..it's my system. If I have a favorite poet, and there are many, I will read their postings also. I try to read as many of the new member posts as I can, sort of to welcome them to the group. But I agree with everyone else. Reply to other poet's poetry! Pull from the back of the file.. find a poem that had 0 responses (I found one the other day from 'Joshua' that was wonderful). Don't think if we don't post a reply that we don't like your work. There are many reasons for not posting a reply. Keep writing! Keep posting! And keep questioning!  |
