What is philosophy? Is it a weak attempt to grasp some better understanding of the world around us? Such as in the case of Roman gods and myths? A modern day solve all/sleep easy solution? Can philosophy even have a question in it? Or perhaps a vein attempt to explain ourselves rather than our enviroment. Or maybe just something that passes the time of an ackward person who thinks too much. If you look too closely you loose your eye sight... right? But how is that even related. I dont know but i dont want to go blind. But maybe its like eating forbidden fruit... your screwed once you start. Because it tastes so good. hrmmm... later "The biggest ocean can not stop a man from drowning" - Paul Watley |

interesting observation (wasn't that a smart thing to say?) personally i was brought up to appreciate great minds and my parents,or at least my mother taught me to base my world on reason and logic, not simply on the word of others. And i always loved to think, just think. So,to me philosophy is simply an exploration,of life, enviroment, spirituality, everything. i suppose some have used it as an escape from whatever it is they are escaping,i just always thought it was fun to think (pun intended). ![]() "All art is an expression of pain."~John Lennon |

I've seen arguments like this before. quote: Generally speaking, any attempt for us to grasp some better understanding of the world around us is weak. But by "weak", you question seems to imply that philosophical contemplation lacks value. This is simply wrong. quote: I think the Roman mythology analogy has at least one redeeming element ... that philosophers and theologians can be wrong in drawing conclusions from their observations of their environment. But the application should not involve throwing the proverbial baby out with the bathwater ... even though Socrates (through Plato) alluded to the Greek gods in his defense, his contributions to the philosophical world were great ... it is our job to build on the strides our predecessors made and to not repeat their errors. quote: As opposed to the person who squanders his time and thinks too little? quote: If you don't look closely enough you get T-boned at a busy intersection ... right? ![]() quote: Just be careful at those intersections. ![]() ![]() quote: Something like that. Philosophy is the critique of common sense. And don't confuse philosophy with onanistic hobbies. ![]() Both have their place!!! Brad |
