In a recent movie I watched, there was a certain phrase used, by multiple characters at different times, that I found *really* irritating. The first time it was used, it went something like this:

"I could never be with anyone who didn't take politics as seriously as I do."

Okay, I thought - maybe this character isn't a complete jerk, maybe his whole life revolves around his social conscience and it's something he does feel that strongly about. Then, later, my favorite actress in the whole world says:

"I could never be with anyone who owned a boat."

A boat? Com'on here, guys. There was no intimation prior to this in the story-line hinting she had experienced some particularly traumatic event on a boat, nor really any mention (by her) of boats at all. It was out of left field, and seemed a really inane criteria for love.

But it did get me thinking about it. Even though few of us have probably put such things into words (and poets most certainly should be doing that!), I'll bet most of us do have some sort of such criteria - things we absolutely could not accept in a relationship.

Ignoring the obvious (I could never be with anyone who was a serial killer), how would YOU fill in the blanks?

I would never "BE" with anyone who...

...isn't intelligent
...has no sense of humor
...isn't romantic
...doesn't like adventure
...is a "taker"
...likes to argue
...wants to live in the frigid tundra
...doesn't like to hug
...doesn't say "I love you"
...screws around
...doesn't like Sunshine and dolphins

...ergo, I'm not with anyone...It seems that I can usually find everything but the screwing around and the dolphin parts, ya know??
BTW... Joe Fox had a boat - The "Fox III" - I really liked that boat...

I could never be with anyone who:

was prejudiced
was mean to salesclerks and waitresses
was without honor
had no sense of humor
didn't like animals
couldn't understand my need to be silly sometimes
couldn't understand my need to be creative
couldn't 'debate' a topic without getting angry
couldn't just sit on a bench and watch the people go by
couldn't be the passenger while I drive
wouldn't understand we all have faults and might as well overlook the little ones because life is too short!

doesn't see the real me..the person inside...the romantic, the poet.....the lover of beautiful places and wonderous sites.
I could never be with someone who didn't understand and respect all those things..and so many more..but, alas, I am

-was not honest with themselves or me
-had no feelings
-was a "mama's boy"
-couldn't take me for who I was
-didn't understand my love for teddy bears
-tried to make me into someone I was not
-was not willing to go along with a couple of crazy ideas once in a while
-refused to take me seriously if I was upset
-found something wrong with everyone

What movie was that, Ron? Who *is* your favorite actress?

Everyone made very long lists. I guess I can think of quite a few, really, but I won't list them all... the main two are--

1.-- I could never be with anyone who doesn't like music.

2.-- I could never be with anyone who is lazy.

Pretty simple, but true. Energy rules. Music fills my life.

Doreen, Elizabeth is absolutely right about the movie being "You've Got Mail." Nan also alluded to it (with the Joe comment).

And yes, that makes Meg Ryan my favorite actress. At least until I see my next Sandra Bullock or Goldie Hawn movie... And that list should also give you some hints on what I find most attractive in a woman.

Now. To answer my own question. In my usual round-about way. In another recent movie, the male lead asks the female lead what she does for a living. She's an editor of a glitzy woman's magazine, and she shows him a copy. It has one of the typical "How to Keep Your Man Happy in Bed" headlines and he laughs.

"You know what a woman needs to do to keep a man happy?" he asks sarcastically.

"What?"

"Show up..."

Well, my answer's not quite that simplistic, but almost.

I could never be with a woman that didn't want to be with me. Every thing else is negotiable!

Hhhhmm..this was a very good question..I guess we all compromise ourselves in (most) relationships because no one is exactly the same..Well, I could list a few things, but I'll just stay with what I think is the most important one...
