Finishing up the final stages of my book (not poetry related) and was supposed to have been done at the beginning of this year. ![]() Anyway, we have a little proverb section and I thought I'd share a few: 1. It is the dull man who is always sure, and the sure man who is always dull. --Henry Louis Mencken 2. Conversation is the art of never appearing a bore, of knowing how to say everything interestingly, to entertain with no matter what, to be charming with nothing at all. --Guy de Maupassant 3. Minds are like parachutes. They only function When they are open. --Sir James Dewar And my personal favorite: 4. Speech is civilization itself. The word, even the most contradictory word, preserves contact -- it is silence which isolates. --Thomas Mann [This message has been edited by Brad (edited 07-19-2000).] |

Brad: Number 4 is a great quote (and I'm sure you know why I think so). Jim |

Jim, I hadn't realized how especially poignant that might be for you. How goes it with the big D.? Brad |

Brad: Big D is still fighting the silence. ![]() In addition to doing well with his PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), he is also spelling simple words (car, bus, pen, apple, cat, ball, Donovan), recognizing words by sight (the above words, tickle, I, want, kick), and making simple sentences with flash cards ("I want ... apples, tickle, cars, etc.) and matching these words to objects. Not bad for a 5 year old (let alone an autistic 5 year old). You were right ... speaking is not a prerequisite to reading and this new avenue of Donovan's learning is showing us a little bit more of what is inside our little boy's head. ![]() Thanks for asking.
