A conversation with a friend (who is my opposite in many ways... but you could say we are similar, because we both like to think about these things, whether we think the same way or not) 1) (me) what is more important: to have money or to have emotion? 2) emotion 1) then what is wrong with our education system? 2) tons 1) why is it that you can get through high school without ever taking an art class, and if you go without math you're considered ignorant? 2) because art is not considred a necessary skill. you can teach it to yourself 1) the point is not the skill. the point is immersion. and practice 2) math is necessary for the business world 1) my point... money or emotion. you choose money 2) no. our basis of survival chooses money. and as mammals we need to form an equilibrium with our environment 1) well, i plan to change it. the basis that is. no reason our society should stay the same 2) y not? it works 1) it depresses me. it functions but it's a totally left-brained world 2) not totally 1) well too much 2) it keeps order. without it we wouldn't do anything and would die out in 20 years 1) yeah, but it makes millions of people live a depressed life from ignored emotion 2) which is better: life with little emotion or no life at all 1) no life at all. that's what i pick. no contest 2) then you are going to have trouble adapting to your environment 1) i was having trouble. but i choose to adapt my environment to me 2) virus 1) excuse me? 2) thats what a virus does 1) people do it every day. i'm not the first 2) i know that doesn't change it 1) so it is bad? 2) not necessarily, just don't damage other people beliefs. gtg So what do y'all think? I admit that I was being a little overly-general, but I really think there is too much focus on money in the world and not enough on emotion. But the debate goes so much farther than that. Anyone want to continue? ![]() |

Well, sorry it took so long for me to get back here but I'd thought I'd add my two cents: 1) (me) what is more important: to have money or to have emotion? 2) emotion I think you've started with a false dichotomy here. Money and emotion are not mutually exclusive. 1) then what is wrong with our education system? 2) tons Gotta agree with you there. ![]() 1) why is it that you can get through high school without ever taking an art class, and if you go without math you're considered ignorant? 2) because art is not considred a necessary skill. you can teach it to yourself Well, ninety nine percent (a guess) of professional artists in the world are trained. Art and emotion are not the same thing and art is generally considered a private enjoyment whereas with math, one can help others. 1) the point is not the skill. the point is immersion. and practice 2) math is necessary for the business world How do you define the business world? Math is considered practical because as a result of mathematics you can contribute tangibly to society in a number of different fields. Design is an example of art that does the same thing. 1) my point... money or emotion. you choose money 2) no. our basis of survival chooses money. and as mammals we need to form an equilibrium with our environment Not sure where you're going here. 1) well, i plan to change it. the basis that is. no reason our society should stay the same I agree. 2) y not? it works Does it? 1) it depresses me. it functions but it's a totally left-brained world 2) not totally 1) well too much Disagree. There may be a certain attitude predisposed to the left brained but I'm not at all sure I would want to live in a world completely dominated by the right. 2) it keeps order. without it we wouldn't do anything and would die out in 20 years 1) yeah, but it makes millions of people live a depressed life from ignored emotion Depression or death? Depression allows for the possibility of change. Death isn't something you can change. 2) which is better: life with little emotion or no life at all 1) no life at all. that's what i pick. no contest Why? It's a relative argument. If you felt less that you do now, you wouldn't know it because you've never felt more. If you did feel more than that would hold out the possibility of change -- and therefore hope. 2) then you are going to have trouble adapting to your environment 1) i was having trouble. but i choose to adapt my environment to me Not much of a Taoist, are we? Still, I agree. We should adapt our environment to ourselves but we should also adapt ourselves to the environment (I don't see and either/or here). 2) virus 1) excuse me? 2) thats what a virus does 1) people do it every day. i'm not the first 2) i know that doesn't change it 1) so it is bad? 2) not necessarily, just don't damage other people beliefs. gtg In a state of constant change, adaptation inevitably leads to change in other things (however minute). You're going to change people's beliefs, you just can't predict how. I don't know who I was agreeing with or who I was disagreeing with here but I hope you had fun with the conversation. Brad |

I would like to add another note here. Some of the highest paid professions in this country, (USA) are technically artists. IE: Actors/Actresses; Musicians; Novellists. Just a thought. |
