Savannah afternoons Can sweat. Humidity hangs too close And blocks the voyeuristic breeze From exploring with its touch The places we would prefer cool. I left the bench And sought someplace dark and cool To wile away the few hours between Noon’s burn of sun And evenings change of tide. I found Charlie’s On a side street The door said “Cool Inside” Just like any local bar It was dark and stank of stale beer Unwashed bodies and stale smoke So it was just my sort of place. I sat at the bar and ordered a beer I just stared at more than anything As I listened to the barkeep Debate with a guy he called “Doc” About the merits of the US Getting involved in the Middle East. Didn’t take me long to tune them out And turn my attention to the mirror behind the bar Where I could watch a young couple Who must have wandered in like I did. They were engrossed in the lean Across table top and touch of hands, Shy smiles and glances meeting coy returns. Not yet Lovers, I thought But almost. Maybe tonight they would seal the deal And either cling Or depart With memories of an afternoon In the romantic South. Made me remember A few times I had thought love Would save me Or at least grace me with a fond memory, Then I thought of Lilly and of how she and I Had burned bright the midnight And carried sunbeams into evenings. I shrugged and laughed. Doc and the ‘keep Stopped their war of words and stared. I just dropped a five on the bar top And headed for the door… Wondering if Jean was in a good mood And if Rita’s was too busy for A corner booth where I could watch The people come and go. ...don't I remember Doc? I do believe so... ... May I tell you once again... that what? I can't repeat myself? Ah well, then... I shall let the others come in and do so for me... and I will grin all afternoon... |

Well Duncan quoted the two parts I like the best. So interesting... I think I saw another one... Great, two in a day...I say just about the same thing each new addition to this story...you put me right there... with such fine details I can smell the place. Enjoyed, Hugs Pat ..without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.. |
