Donnie Gay, was good they say- And I guess I must agree, And as I write I must admit- To guilt of jealousy. Mahan was a "pretty boy"- But he could scratch a bronc. And Hawkeye was an "all-around"- In chute or honkytonk. Shoulders was before my time- A household name back then And Casey Tibbs, Freckles Brown- Both legendary men. But have ever taken time- To think about this, fan? Along with all the heroes, There were lots of "also rans"? Like me, I never was the best- Except within my heart. I drew my stock, and paid my fees, And tried to do my part. I can't complain about my scores- I guess they judged me fair- But with a champ, an "also ran", Can never quite compare. I rode my broncs, and topped my bulls, And had my share of spills. I think of near-disasters, And it still gives me chills. I, too, have signed some autographs- For young, and older fans. I doubt if they recall my face- Among the "also rans". I realized at thirty-five- "You'll never reach the top". I rolled my riggin', hung it up. I knew I had to stop. But sometimes when the nights are cool- I'll drive out to the stands- And reminisce of lights and cheers- For champs and "also rans". |

John, you just need to keep penning these Rodeo tunes, and grab a guitar instead of the reins. |

John, I always find your poems very interesting. I don't know why I missed reading this when it was up at the top. Sorry. "To be in love with love is truly to love".....by Paladin ~with heart hugs from Ethel__GG~ [This message has been edited by garysgirl (05-29-2003 03:16 AM).] |
