Don't get any hotter than late in July,
With south winds a blowin', suckin' you dry,
As dust devils dance, obscuring the sky,
Farmers look skyward, with trained weather eye,
Keep buckin' those bales, and a breakin' your back,
'Cause storm clouds are brewing, the sky's turning black,
First drop on the forehead, a run to hay's shed,
John Deere's a putt-putting, hay's shed dead ahead,
But the tractor don't make it, as clouds open wide,
Out on the plains, there is no place to hide,
So you just keep on working, soaked to the skin,
Muscles are aching, but the hay's finally in,
Then a sprint to the house, it's time to get fed,
But you're too tired for supper, so you head on to bed,
'Cause sun-up tomorrow will still be July,
With south winds a blowin', to suck farm boys dry.

I remember that summer - I wasn't out on the farm though - I was probably being wimpy and staying dry instead... This is a great write, Tim...

Great write Tim. Made me yearn for a tall glass of cool water and some shade! Chris

Tim, funny enough your wonderful poem gave me goosebumps .... I have some memories from childhood when I sometimes helped at my Uncle's farm .... ahh the smell of fresh hay and the worry that one was not in time to collect it before the rain ruined everything ... the anxious looks at the sky ... no one would speak of any other topic that was not about weather.
I enjoyed this very much Tim.
Love, Margherita
