The Coyotes know these border towns, know the ways of Northerners. They prowl sandy canyons with keen eyes but need not hunt their prey, for these lambs come willingly. Coyotes point to nighttime stars and the moon to serve as guides, bright with promises of dreams at the journey's end. Shepherded into airless, dark grain hopper cars - the lambs grow nervous. They cry for agua for the trip and call for una luz. Shhh, say the Coyotes, do not wake the night! The lambs move quietly, against rusty walls, they step aside for the next lamb and the next. The Sonora is unforgiving, particularly in summer. Having spent their pesos, the Coyotes are long gone, when, four days later, the lambs are found. Very vivid and accurate description. I like the line about "don't wake the night." Kethry Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind. Unknown |

That was certainly a travesty and a sad way of finding home for the lambs... You have written the story well. Thanx Cor. |

Well done, Corrine. I like it. And it goes to prove that even the coyote can be denigrated. Kraw' |

Made my heart hurt, for the lambs and the shepards...Was just reading about some folks found in a truck stop. Sad. TD |

I wish I was as knowledgeable to be able to write about nature and other topics (rather than emotion) as well as you. M |

Thank you all. "Coyotes" is the Spanish nickname for "guides" - people who smuggle non-citizens into the U.S., particulary from Mexico in to the U.S. This has gone on for years, and for years many have died at the negligence of the smugglers. Last week 18 migrants were found dead in a truck trailer in Texas. Finally, the Mexican government is making noises about changing laws and cracking down on the "Coyotes," but it's a very complex issue. The Mexican citizens attempting to cross into the U.S. won't tell on their "Coyotes," because they don't know if they'll need to use them again (sometimes many attempts are made), and because the Coyotes threaten their family back in Mexico.
