I suppose everyone knows
about the way you failed
its evident
in those simpatico gazes
they lamely lay out for you
as you pass them on the walkway
these are the days
where she turns in your mind
like the chambers of a revolver
where flashcard questions bamboozle
your afternoon nap attempts
even the marijuano
it builds little fires in the garden
that she stripped
naked
in the middle of the night
leaving you with acidity
and a broken spirit
she wonders why you don’t write
anymore
maintaining a magnificent ignorance
that we are all capable of
at that age
when you are as biodegradable
as the letters you have forgone
her voice
even the thought of it
needles your heart
there is no argument left in you
your vocal chords are worn thin
from cross examining
a revolving door
these women
they can never understand
the impact they make
with a smile
and a promise
with a declaration of love
that is strictly reactionary
to the fawning we engage
the bridges we construct
in their honor
or the foundation we scramble
to lay
before they turn towards the crowd
and wander off
best for you to build a fortress
with broken stones
and not answer the doorbell
when something with a pointed tail
comes along singing

better to live in the doghouse
and be thankful
for the pats on the head
they extend
and expect nothing more
than the bone they throw you
