He took a wrong turn somewhere between the garden
and a hot space of bricks and cacti,
found himself trapped in a huge box with four humans
and two aggressive furred animals.

For two days, he dashed from one hiding place
to another, until the wooly hunters cornered him
and bit off his tale.
He reared onto two back legs,
made himself large, hissed.

The human mother picked him up with a small, soft paw;
he clamped his jaws tightly around one of her bony digits.
She switched paws, and so did he, biting, clinging.
She too, made herself large and hissed in a strange tongue,
but then unexpectedly released him into a cluster of poppies.

He eyed her a while longer. She looked down,
surprised to find two heart-shaped ruby rings.

This is fantastic! I've had a few similar animal experiences.
But of course, as Karilea saw, there must be more to this one than the lizard's tail.

Ah...a lizard run amuck

I can just picture my own dog chasing one around the house from corner to corner. I had a hampster get loose in the house when my children were young. We searched everywhere for the darn thing and finally found him 2 weeks latter quite content in a nest he'd made for himself in my underwear drawer ( kindly chewing his way through quite a number of unmentionables in the meantime). I love the details that always flow from your work...and this is no exception

Very nicely done Core. Last summer I discovered a VERY large(10-11 inch)red skink that had pre-placed himself in a bucket on the porch, saving me the trouble and the gift of any Ruby rings.

(smiles) Oh my gosh, this is so amusing, sweet friend, we had a similar experience with a raccoon sometime ago, who hid in the bushes and snuck through a busted screen door and made a nest in the crawlspace in the furnace room! LOL! (kiss on cheek) Hehehe, looks like we all have wonderful anecdotes to tell, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Corinne, thank you for sharing!

LOL.. Cor..I assumed it was true and not a myth, but look at what you have written from a different perspective and you have an example of how the truth can then be symbolic of other greater things... I could spin a tale around your lizard and the ruby rings he left...as I am sure many here could...creating a mythology of sorts..from reality.

Now, my comment... you could write well your own mythology and tell the world a great deal about life, rights, wrongs, loves, loss, as well as entertain.... you have that talent... and that is what I meant.

Thank you so much!! West Indians write a lot of poetry about animals, and I grew up reading a lot of them. Have not seen much in Passions (don't write them myself either) but I truly love this one.
