Sandy brought me flowers in the Winter; like children sharing an imagined song we danced, forgetting tears and sympathy for friends and lovers blown away in war; we were released from worrying if they were safe, secure in knowing where they are and how they'll never change, never age, become infirm or crazy, like the squirrel eyed shopping bagger sleeping on the stairs below us just inside the cracked, wind rattled door. Later, on a memory crowded bed we loved believing, with our bodies and our souls entwined, death and all the twisting mysteries of fate swirling down the endless corridors of time would pass our doorway harmlessly mistaking us for shadows. ©2003 by icebox |

The immortality of youth dealing with mortality - Such a bizarre dichotomy it is - You've expressed this beautifully, icebox... ![]() |

Martie ~ Thank you for reading and for your comments. I am glad you enjoy it. Like many my age, I have heard the "60's" be either glamorized or sensationalized too often. While it is true that we did some things then which explored interesting extremes, the decade also was often very painful. Nan ~ *smile* Yes, but at the time I would never have seen it that way. I think there are good reasons why it was decades before I wrote this. I smile because you are right and yet I grew up without a sense of physical immortality. I believed deeply that I would die young and at a very specific age, and I almost did. When I survived past that age, I was astonished and completely without plans. Thank you for reading and for your comments. serenity blaze ~ *laugh* I am not sure how to respond to that. I am glad it was good for you. Thank you for reading it. |
