The Calling Hills

I can’t look at the hills today,
the living hope of them,
the life like skin that seems to own
their rocks but owns them
like a bell owns sound: not at all;
for even a song is only sound
life only life, skin merely skin.

I cannot climb the hills from here
to look at what I do not own,
being alive; a live being at least,
to see the fields of wildflowers
like a lover’s eyes in sunlight,
lidded slow as memory
in the shadow of a passing cloud.

It is the hills that own me then,
and now is not my time;
nor their time yet to call me
though they call and call again
until I swear I’ll come to them
this very day or on a day to come,
because the hope of them, the life,
the eyes of flowers in sunlight
own my heart and will it so.

Hope is essential, and dangerous - like the sun.
Strong work well done.  Thank you for sharing it.

aw yes my friend, but even the earth will one day have to give up all that it owns, physically I own a mountain side in Idaho and I must say how blessed I am for it, but spiritually in Christ I own the heavens and I haven’t seen all there is to see, hear or touch yet and you write so well I do hope to see you there.

Aww, but those hills are alive...
and your voice echo's within them.

It is beautiful what you wrote Ed,
I love the sound of this~

It's a bit scary. I mean, it sounds like the hills are dominating you. Good job.

Well, I wouldn't exactly say dominating, but when you want to go you want to go, and the call of 'em can get pretty pesky if you don't! So I go when I can and wish when I can't....
