I had slept a solid week dreamwalking of movement--slow... and then I heard the telephone I answered-- he spoke casual: "I do believe my Father's dead." I thought he was just being cruel. "This is not the least funny..." He told me he just didn't know. He said his father was asleep-- in the chair, there, watching news. He said his Dad, was cold to touch. He said his father's eyes were vague. Open to the ceiling, rough... I closed my eyes, remembering... I knew...I knew...I knew...He said: "I tried to awaken him." I knew--just knew--another death. He asked me, then, "What should I do?" "Baby?" I heard his voice break. I heard him sob, "Oh baby please..." "Baby?" "help-me-please-I-beg..." "Baby? Babe? Oh I need you..." So I did it. Once again... but this time? I was alone. His mother fell at the casket. I ladeled scotch down sister's throat. I watched the Masons tossing rose-- the firemen changed honor guard, every quarter to the hour-- then he got the gun's salute. Somehow? I did it--once again... somehow I did that for our "Dads". Different from just one week... when I saw my father laid so thin to rest of little grieve-- Cancer begs a pardon's wreath-- Prayers boast of selflessness: "Not like this--no? not like this." "so thin to rest of little grieve-- Cancer begs a pardon's wreath--" those words are so touching -they hurt. I liked your poem, very much, it was the truth. |
