The Softer Hurt

Wrapped around your swing of hand
you kissed me can you recall the way
I sang and turned you down that day
you said off-key the tune of us
but I knew what you really meant
was that I couldn't love you big enough.

I tried to flay the thief you kept
hidden behind your childhood's door
where your mother drank her words of love
and passed out cold on any floor
leaving you wondering
how to turn off the pot of boiling stew
such magnitude was made for you.

So how could I climb the loving tree
no branch was strong enough you see
I was angry with the truth your cure
you threw at me from the open door
taking all the things that made you tall
leaving the shuttered infants sleeping still
with me to tell the reasons why for you.

Now past the years of your regret
forgiving is the softer hurt I give

Martie - I have also found that there are many kinds of hurt, some strong, and some soft, but they always seem to be there for some reason. Even if one trys to let it go...

You astound me woman. This was exceptional in the view, the delivery and the heartfelt intent. Well done. TD

Martie, I hadn't even read your poem until just now...

I sang and turned you down that day
you said off-key the tune of us

I guess we may have been on the same wavelength...

All the things unstated but so very -present-.... not just an elephant in the living room, but a herd of them, that you show us by exposing all the spaces around them, until their outlines become undeniable...

Well done, Martie. Well done.

Martie, even if it is a "softer hurt", it's still a hurt...isn't it?

Pretty difficult to pick the best line or stanza out of this beautiful yet hurting poem.  So much soul pouring out.   KJ

Through rubble and trouble and dark of night
The yawn of a dawn will hasten the light
