Rita’s was closing. In the kitchen I heard the sounds Of rattled pans and metallic slide Of a scraper on the grill. Jean, handed me a beer Grinned And nodded her head towards The source of the most noise. “I think the kid is whipped.” She laughed and winked Then reached across the bar And slapped me on the forehead “You’re evil!” I chuckled and took a swallow Of the cold beer letting it slide Across lingering memories. “Let’s go see if they could use some help.” I laughed and headed for the kitchen. When I saw the kid I knew He hadn’t worked this hard in a long time And had probably made the job a lot harder Than it had to be, But He was still there and that showed grit. “You boys want a hand?” I asked. Joe said no, too proud to ask and in fact Not needing any help. He had done a fine job of making the kid’s Night a living hell all by himself. The kid said yes. Putting on the best stern face I could I replied “Make up your minds, I’m only asking once.” And reached for an apron Knowing the kid needed a break. “Move over.” I told him and watched both the relief and resentment cross his face. I turned to the sink and began scrubbing. “I’m Buddy.” I said over my shoulder “You got a name?” “Or you want I should call you Goob like Joe does?” I laughed and heard him sputter “Yeah, I have a name.” “I’m Mike.” “Well Mike, don’t just stand there, grab a rag and clean the cooler.” He shuffled off, looking a bit like A pup that had been scolded, And I turned to the sink And back to thoughts of Lilly. |

I'd love to JM but Buddy's a bit slow at keepin' up..... Let's give him a chance to get a feel for this story tellin' thing, then we'll see!! 'She laughed and winked Then reached across the bar And slapped me on the forehead “You’re evil!”' Didn't take Jean long to figure him out huh?!?!?! |

"Slapped me on the forehead...", so typical... tsk... Love these stories and in so few sentences you've both managed to create: Rita, Jean, Joe, Goob-Mike, Buddy and Lilly....each unique...and everyone, someone we've met.... Okay....have to go see what's next... Enjoying these..... |
