He stands
at the edge of the wood.
at the last bastion of comfort,
for as he gazes back across the meadow,
and beyond the gently flowing creek,
he sees his home and his family within,
and the village of common folk.

ahead is the wood and the battle yet fought.
The battle within is greater still,
for fear is a mighty foe,
that conquers the soul unto death,
and lessens the man his truth.
Robbing the world of freedoms quest.

Behind him lies the known and true.
Ahead lies the unknown battle cry.

The woods are deep and dark beyond,
so he kneels in humble need,
and knows the Grace of choice to make.
To go the way of courage found.

One step is made toward the wood,
for prayer thus said in face of fear,
makes of a man his own true heart.
To know he is of freedoms dream,
To fight and win his soul,
that those behind may ever dwell
in Peace for courage sake.

I wrote this poem for my son, John. He is a 2nd Lt
in the US Army and was just shipped to the Middle
East. I ask your prayers for his safety.

A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails.

Dear lady, what a wonderful poem and I shall say a prayer for him every single night.  As a mother I wish at this moment I could at least hold your hands to let you know I understand and care, may God bless and watch over him.

Ellie ~

Just add me to the list of people praying for John and for all the other sons of America and her allies.

This tugged at my heartstrings and played a mournful tune.

Warm hugs to you and prayers for the safe return of your beloved son, John...

Ellie,

A beautiful heartfelt poem. Very well written. I can barely imagine how you feel, but want you to know your honorable, heroic son, you and all family members are in my prayers. God be with him and all of you and grant you perseverance and strength at this difficult time of separation.

I salute all of you. And, thank you.

Hugs and love, Pat

First, my prayers are also with you and your son, my friend.  I did read your poem here before and I admit that I had a difficult time responding the first time because it brought to my own attention what perhaps my own son might be feeling. I am back though because your poem does deserve my vote. God bless you for posting this poem in honor of our young men and women at home and abroad who serve in the armed forces. I do hope that your poem will be in the book to bring recognition to those who we love and care for and who with dignity and honor serve our country.

Ellie, your poem is most certainly worthy of being in this book for sure. You always write from your heart, and soul, and I know your Son must be so proud of his Mom. I also know you must be so worried about him, but know that God is there watching over him and all the men and woman who are giving of their time for our Country. I will include John in my prayers also.

Sometimes we have to follow a stronger voice, even if it's silent.

Ellie,

Poems of this type of longing and hope are what is getting me excited to see this book in print. This book at the time Ron has decided to put it out there for us to submit to and decide upon the words that will grace the pages are is what is going to be to all who reads it now and in the future a true time capsule. When one reads this book they will be gathering the feelings of true people as we prepare ourselves in this time of unrest and possible war. My heart and prayers go out to you, your son, and your entire family as well as all families that are being impacted directly or indirectly in these times of struggle for our nation and the world.
