For Once Upon a Day We were all children for a day rocked in the cradle of dusk Each to their own winter mission Locking out cold in parka husks He glided amongst the metal car rows With a grace and an ease of a gull that drifts effortlessly on seashore breezes drinking the blue of wine-skies till full He tapped the careless that backed without looking He slowed those who scurried from their traps He gave thanks to the thankless, hope to the hopeless He warmed those who were absent winter wraps He pulled tears from eyes that had never before cared Gave them the time a family together can share For once a year, He walks among the Abels and Cains As they celebrate His birth, and praise His name. And throughout the world, no calamity to grieve No deaths, no great illness for those who believe No war, no famine, no lives taken by sword On the Day of His birth, On the Day of the Lord. |
