Moved from a shack to a barn

When I lived in the city
I made the acquaintance
Of a policeman called “Frenchy”
Reflecting his name
Marshall DuBois

And when he walked on the “beat”
That included my building
He would stop by the apartment
On extra cold nights
To warm up for a bit
And listen to music

After the bars closed
I was sharing a pipe
With another friend “Mac”
Whose real name was Bob
When Frenchy walked in

With nary a knock
Which was his custom
And nodded to Mac
Who near swallowed the pipe
Then went to the kitchen
To put on some coffee

Mac, in a panic, asked
“Ed, what was THAT?”
“A cop just walked in”

The “That”, I replied
“Is one cold, tired Frenchy
And he’s a good friend”

"Wanna hear some Santana?”
