I am leaving Tuscaloosa
For the artist in me
Can not stand to be suffocated
In dictatorial policies

In trying to be educated
You can not stifle
The freedoms of the mind
For the greed of profits

In a policy that wants
To treat adults as children
Incapable of making
Their own decisions
I cry for fresh air

Since when
In the name of society
Must we protect?
Society from itself

Since when has the right
To ban furniture
Been governed into laws
Of what we sit on

My tears flow
From a media
So under control
That dissent is so futile
In words so ghostly
That they represent
Freedom of speech
Imprisoned

But the winds
Will carry me elsewhere
Where the eagle can fly
In the sunshine of thought
So unhindered that all
Can hear the breeze
Of an independent mind

In the dreams
Of unlimited opportunity
The educated elite
Will choose to dictate
To a free society
Who can do business
In a state of monopoly

Winds let my flight
Fly free of this oppression
In such an American way
Of believing
Anybody has a chance
To succeed
Without governmental help
At any level of sponsorship

In a tear so small
No one will be able to magnify
My words will fall mute
To legislative censorship
For in a University town
That mayor is just a pawn

The voters and their council
Show their morality in saying
Do not disturb
The hierocracy
Of a university saying
What is good for them

Thought: The College that can only teach minors will never teach adults to handle anything.

Thought: To go to college, the idea is that we turn out adults capable of making their own decisions, so why must college administrators control their profit at the expense of an education, taking away students rights to determine where they can eat in democracy.

Thought: In civil rights no color mandates the principles of our constitution.

Thought: If you think I am wrong, God bless you, for you are an American treasure.

Thought: If you can hate me for being an American speaking my mind but respecting me for it, my prayers have been answered.

Thought: I would love for parents to say my child is grown up enough to know where they can eat.

Note: I truly expect to be penalized for speaking my mind, imprisoned to where no judge will control my mind.

Good luck to you, wherever the winds carry you. *S* I don't always understand everything you write... and find the "thoughts" following your poems distracting rather than enlightening... but I do enjoy reading your work.
