I drove the gravel
Now beginning to whiten
From the drizzled white flakes
And watched the fading light
Grabbed in gnarled fingers
By trees bent in break
During last years icy onslaught.

The 30 or so blue black turkey
Eating remnants of corn harvest
Paid no mind to the dim,
Nor me,
But the deer further down
Threw white flags high
And bounded
Wary.

Unsophisticated these pleasures
Of watching Redtail sit in wait
Or a Harris soar just above tall grass
Searching for a last meal
To hold frigid at bay

But,
Perhaps I need to know
I saw these vestiges of wild
Among cultivated, civilized
To validate the same
In me.

Ron--For me too, to get back to the elemental, is to see part of myself.  Introspective thoughts, and lovely imagery combine for a good read.

===========================

we seem to have been of the same thought this weekend..I drove to the river yesterday morn, I just needed to be by water...
it was so cold my ears went numb...but the hawks, wild turkey and deer I saw were worth it...as was the beauty of the white barked birches and cottonwood trees, their winter starkness stands out so lovely against the back drop of the pines and their dark barked brothers. And then there is the sound of the water...the current in motion...
Mother Nature is one hell of a poet

ah.....this explains my lacking....not enough mother nature...my only time alone is on a 30 minute commute....and rofg...not too many deer or turkey hang out by the side of a busy highway......
wonderful imagery...wonderful thoughts, leading to an ending worth pondering

I was picking at remnants myself,
yesterday, driving north,
from visiting the south...
noticed that the hawks were pairing,
and thought...

spring.

It was a good sign.

Ron,

The imagery so good in this I find it relaxing. I like:

"But the deer further down
Threw white flags high
and bounded"

I did re-read and it does leave a calming frame of mind and mood.
That life could be this simple. And, you proved, sometimes it is.

Thank you, enjoyed, Pat

As I have mentioned before, you can learn a lot from watching 'deer.
