They wheedled fire
from green trees;
smoke emerged
reluctantly,
child-like as on
an unwanted errand.

It cuddled slowly
round the edge of
a long valley where
spritely young trees
were being nurtured
by an Italian Spring;
where gleaming moss clothed
ancient, pitted rocks
as snow melted slowly.

We shared the wide-awake sky
with hills, unaltered from times
when pagan Marsi claimed the soil,
made their celebration
with rites of dedication
and centuries of toil.

Time flew;
from the barbecue
we made a bee-line
in a very fast car
for a bar
where they sold
coffee, tea, wine,
beer (icy cold),
a three-decker sandwich
and, for the crowd,
played very loud
songs in a foreign language.

I enjoyed this read.Even though I don't like BBQ's, I do enjoy being outdoors,  watching those trees grow and the rivers flow. Thanks for sharing this trip.

I DO : like BBQ's, but more than that, I so much enjoyed your use of imagery and you made me feel as if I were a part this lovely scene.  Wonderful!  Welcome to Passions, I'm sure you're going to find a lot of fans of your poetry here, as well as make many new friends.

The stars will shine when I am gone,
the earth will turn on as before,
the gulls, still race along the shore,
the morning star, still kiss the dawn

Thanks to all you lovely poets for your kind comments about *Barbecue In Abruzzo*.I lived and worked (as a teacher) in Italy during 1981-83.

My students were always very kind to me. The occasion that inspired the poem was organized for me by a group of students in the beautiful and famous Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo.

I enjoyed the barbie and the company, but was fascinated by the many contrasts I observed : historically, environmentally and socially. I tried to capture the effects of those obsrvations in this poem.

Whether or not I succeeded will, of course, be up to the reaction of individual readers. I will most certainly be grateful for any suggestions involving revision(s).
