I think about the passing years, Since we've said "good-bye"- The friends we had in common, How I've watched them age and die. They'd often stop and ask me- "Say, have you heard from her?" I'd sadly shake my head at them, And wonder where you were. They said we made the perfect pair, And had a certain glow, When we were seen together, At almost every rodeo. You ran your barrels, while I rode bulls, Yes, we were quite a pair- Until the day you drove away, And left me standing there. You felt you were a champion, While I was second rate. I guess, perhaps, you had it right- That seems to be my fate. I rode a few more years, sweetheart- But everybody knew- That I could never give my best, While I was not with you. I gave away my riggin' So a kid could have a start- I hung my spurs upon the wall I didn't have the heart... To keep on going down the road, While I was feeling blue. So I'll just stay here punching cows, At night I dream of you. |
