I loosened my umbrella today,
and my fingertips delighted
in the surprise discovery
of a few precious raindrops
still enclosed
deeply and perfectly
in the folds of the dark material.

It made me remember its last outing,
and the walk we took together,
and the silent looks we shared
which were infinite in depth...
...and life...
...and sadness...

You pried the umbrella from my hands,
and exposed me to the elements.
You loosened my inhibitions that day,
as we expressed our young love
for the first time;
and my soul delighted
in the discovery
of perfection in...
...your movements...
...and mouth...
...and embrace...

But now you say
I make you so happy that I make you sad,
and I cannot understand your anguish,
even though I feel it...

I shook out my umbrella today,
and placed it in the sun to dry.
But I hope that,
in the folds of the fabric of your soul,
a few precious drops remain,
too.

The soul would have no rainbows, had the eyes no tears.
