While He Is Near (For Jim) How do you ask forgiveness from Someone who’s already dead? Who might have benefited some From words you never said… Our time on earth is fleeting, I watched a good friend die as proof. Though mentioned Christ not once in passing – No, I always stood aloof. Now the grief that comes upon me Is not from the void in my life, But the thought of what eternity Away from God must be like. I can scream and cry I’m sorry, But what retribution meets this sin? For as dead in the ground lies he, I live on, the closet Christian. Lord, have mercy upon Jim, please… And allow me to learn from this guilt, That I might speak to all with ease Of Your blessings that I’ve felt. How You saved this worthless sinner, Giving me a second chance. Please let me bring forth that inner Reassurance of deliverance. Oh, seek the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near! Let the wicked man turn around – The unrighteous man see clear! Let each and all return to the Lord, For He will have compassion. A pardon none but God would afford In such a merciful fashion. Don’t make the same mistakes as I, And think, “There will always be tomorrow.” Don’t let a chance to save a friend slip by, And weigh you down with sorrow. But understand everyone you meet, In God’s image was created. A movie star or a junkie on the street – In Go we’re all related. And know that it but takes a word You offered to another, To have the peace that you’ve assured Eternity for your brother… But no emotion, doubt, or shame Is worth the second guessing Of having not shared Jesus’ name, Or offered a past friend His blessing. What a poignant plea... and one we all need to hear and heed! And know that it but takes a word You offered to another, To have the peace that you’ve assured Eternity for your brother… These are words I need to tape to my mirror and repeat each morning... so shyness never has the chance to trump opportunity. |
