I told her I would do it, If that would be her will With every breath I'd do my best that promise to fulfill I promised if she'd plant it that they would surely come And populate her garden and glow beneath her sun A mansion to her glory, an altar to above, I'd build it for her gladly if she would share her love I'd sacrifice my body and purify my soul, I'd offer up to her my song and from the earth below, They'd rise up through the ashes and reach up to her grace A world of smiling faces would live there on her face. But if I'd seen the mountain that I would have to climb, I could not have held the vision within my doubting mind. I never would have started, I could not have begun, This mountain's surely just too big and I am only one. It rises high into the clouds, Its peak I cannot see It disappears up in the sky and down into the sea It moves ahead before me, beyond my reaching grasp With every gasping breath I say 'this one could be the last! A little further up ahead I know it can't be far If I can pass the moon I'm sure I'll reach the star My foot is not so sure and now the air is getting thin, I'll rest a while and dream of her and then begin again She laid with me when I was sick and then she made me strong She was the one who held me when she knew that I was wrong She stood with me when I fell through that chasm deep within That nearly took my very soul and wouldn't let her in. I knew if I could hold her fast it wouldn't be too long Before I'd stand there by her side and sing her my new song A song of love and hope and peace, my song the air would fill And rise up to her holy place, if that would be her will. |
