"A Simple Parable" the last shall be first And the first shall be last This little parable was spoken For the wise to grasp In the end only they make it That to themselves remain steadfast To seek power, domination and fame Is to look at others with disdain To add a cubit to one's stature Is to go against one's true inner nature Lowly and humble, is to be One with oneself in inward responsibility To let be, what will be Open and receptive to what appears before me O you lowly, then be wise Do not despair, and do not despise But open your eyes, realise and see How foolish and ridiculous, the pompous In their transfigured state can be Is there any wise enough, to know What is it worth, to gain the world But in the process, lose your soul Also, in which direction Does the wind blow The first is quick to possessively grasp The last is lowly and slow But for he that is quick Life carries him (her) along tooooo fast Forever reaching for something out there Ahead of him(her)self, going nowhere But the lowly and slow Observe and absorb all in life's path He(She) comes to know, what needs to be known And by what is known, then relates And by relating, this creates By being, a person becomes This builds character This is true essence of soul But the person that is quick to get He gets so he can exalt himself above others But in getting, there is no real relating No inner depth, no essence of soul Does not become a true self Thus life passes him by And ends up last So then, my dear friend If by now you have not figured it out This little parable is not about Who seems supreme, in the here and now But about who makes it in the end |

Josh, What you referred to in your title as "a simple parable" actually, with your expounding, really didn’t seem to me to be that simple, but, rather, it was to me a very deep and a very profound write. I really liked your take on it. My favorite stanza was... quote: Why I liked this stanza best was not only because it had a wonderful rhyme scheme, but, also because it showed that a pompous or a sinful state is not the normal state (I believe you touch on this elsewhere in your poem) but it is a state that has been changed (transfigured) from the normal and I soooooo believe this to be true. In other words, being not of the world can many times make one feel very abnormal, but, in fact, remaining separate from the ways of the world and living the life that God calls one to live is a very very normal thing to do. God bless you, Josh, and thank you for sharing. -Bob |

Hi Bob. You are right it is not a simple parable. It is a little parable with a very deep profound meaning. A meaning that many of us tend to overlook. Eernity is seriousness and to enter therein we must deny our narcissism. Jesus spoke the words "The first shall be last and the last shall be first" I think His message was that we remain sober and be cautious of the dangers of the self exalted state, in all its manifestations wherein we can begin to lose our inner depth of being. I often write poems like this in self reflection as a reminder to keep me focused on the true path. thanyou Bob Josh |
