April Fool’s Day and Grandpa 1979 It was the perfect cool spring day In Boaz, Wisconsin years ago, The children just got up for school Dashing with faces all aglow. All was well the night before We were all tucked in and warm, Grandpa staying then with us After a health ridden storm. He never seemed too happy Down right crabby was he, But oh how he loved the children With them his heart would be. At two we heard him, up and about Then he returned to bed again, And everyone went back to sleep Listening to the gentle rain. This April Fool’s Day I seen him there So still he did not move, His eyes were open staring up Like he surely did approve. Sometime in the early morning My dad had slipped to death, On this beautiful spring morning He took his final breath. No more did they see his face Or hear his loving laugh, But they remember him today Grandpa’s love on their behalf. By, Marie D. Glass (3-28-07) |
