She looked through that old worn box every day Pulling out pictures and lightly rubbing her fingers on them Pictures of the family, her daughter, lost in a car crash Opening up the yellowed and faded letters Letters from her son who died in Desert Storm Reading every line like it was the first time she’d read them So much loss in her life, these were her memories And now the rock of her life, her husband, had just passed The man that had kept her sane throughout all her pain Telling her that the children were up in heaven Looking down on them as they suffered through their grief Trying to get her through the long, hard days While he was having trouble dealing with it, himself Until it finally took its toll on his broken heart This morning, when she opened the box As she had done a million times before There was a new letter...in the brightest white envelope And in her husband’s writing, her name, Martha Written in a shade of blue unlike any she had ever seen With trembling hands and jangled nerves She pulled out the letter and started reading My Darling, Martha I know you are feeling the deepest of pain right now But I want you to know that we are all together, here William and Katie send their love, as do I. I still sit in my chair and watch you with your memory box And now, the kids sit with me as they’ve done all along You are never alone, my love…we are always with you. Your loving husband, John P.S. – There is still something for you to do Before you come to join us…someone who needs your help And you will know just what to do, as you’ve always known So, don’t turn away that stranger that shows up at the house She’ll need you as much as you need her For she will carry your burdens and you will carry hers When it is done, you will be free to come home. Shaking uncontrollably and with tears in her eyes She folded the letter and put it back into the envelope Stunned and amazed by what had just happened A letter from heaven and the assurance she was not alone A miracle in the truest form just when she needed one She closed the box and put it away just as the doorbell rang A young girl was at the door…Martha said “come in, child”. |

evomx5, A very touching story and I think the thought here that touched me the most is that her family never left her side. This is very comforting especially as I think of those I've loved who've gone on to be with the Lord. Thank you for sharing and God bless you. -Bob |

I still can feel a friend long gone in the room and I simply loved this story! I do believe they watch us, yes indeed they do. Indeed a lovely story. |
