Translation of Passing the Temple Teeming with Fragrance Wang Wei Where is the fragrance And the Temple that teems scent, Beneath mountain clouds, Many miles outwardly sent. Through trackless tall pines Where priest bells you hear from far, Echoing down stream As river cries to where you are. The sun shines palely Across the icy blue sky Till twilight send long shades Creeping to the pool That the river bend has made, In meditation, Thoughts expels chaos dragon, The clear mind smelling Incense on winds imagined. Gloom The Direct translation Not/ know/ teeming/ fragrance/ temple Many/ miles/ enter/ clouds/ peak Ancient / trees/ no/ man(’s)/ path Deep/ mountain/ where(’s)/ priest(’s)/ bell Fountain(spring)/sound/choke(sob, swallow)/ perilous/ rock Sun / color/ chills/ green/ pines Dusk/ daytime/ empty/ pool/ bend Pacify/ Ch’an( Meditation)/ exorcise/ poisonous/ dragon Although I am calling this a translation, it could also be thought of as an inspiration; since much is lost in the change of languages. NOTE * In the original Language the 1st, 3rd, an 5th line have sounds that would be thought of as rhyming. |
