Spanish Moss

Deep, buried deep down,
dark, dank, unforgiving ground
musty leaves and Spanish moss mourn
where once a love was e’er born
a treasured chest buried deep down,
where thoughts now ne’er roam.

Within cavernous wood and
rusted green ironed lock
lie undisturbed a pink silk,
memory of young girl’s frock,
linen doll, some lonesome keys;
lies in dank veiled heart’s mystery.

Came the razing of this land,
hands uncovering treasured chest,
left alone after loss of lover
shed now of its dark, cold cover
discounted moments unburied now
come again in grip of sunlight’s vow.

For sunlight saw forbidden love
beneath the lace of Spanish moss,
tears had fallen, curses heard,
then treasured chest was tossed
buried deep down, dark, dank, ground
Spanish moss whispers a mourning sound.

Perhaps a hundred or more years ago
a lover lost, in grief despaired so;
then treasured chest carried there
to be buried deep, dark, bereft of air;
her silvery shadows wear the lace
of Spanish moss that covers her face

once, a loveless love was born
now only Spanish moss will mourn.

I really liked the poem. Especially the ending. I just sat there and thought about love, and Spanish moss

Lovin' the pictures too hehe.

WOW you were right Sunshine, they match your beautiful poem.

I'd seen Spanish moss before on my trip, but couldn't take a picture then, until I wandered off in Marge's back yard and I thought 'this must be the place where the fairytales are born'.

Thank you for the honor of seeing them fit for your poem.

Great collaboration of words and pictures ladies. This tale is hauntingly seductive and the pictures give me chills. I have never seen this moss other than in pictures. It's always intrigued me.

Hugs, Marti

(big hugggssssss) Oh Karilea, this is so beautifully haunting, sweet friend, I love everything thought it is sad and I wish for the spring of love to again blooming in this ones heart and the robin to nest in that tree and the cobwebs to be cleared of the head! (sigh) This is wonderful, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Karilea, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

This is an incredible write.   I love the Spanish moss here.  It lends to the atmosphere of history.  During the Civil War the plantation owners would often bury their treasures in the yard.  Some even dropped them down wells to escape the looting of the Union troops.  This story reminded me of that and how blessed I feel to live in a city with so much history, beauty and Spanish moss.

The stars will shine when I am gone,
the earth will turn on as before,
the gulls, still race along the shore,
the morning star, still kiss the dawn

Karilea, for some reason, I must have missed this one, too. I'm glad somebody bumped it back here. I loved this...the poetry...the pictures...the thoughts.  There's a lot of moss on trees in this part of Florida. I have always thought it was beautiful, in a strange sort of way. I've also thought of the many stories that it could tell, if it could talk. Isn't it wonderful that such talented poets as yourself can find just the right words to talk for it?!? Thanks for sharing.
Love To All,
Ethel

I get so JAZZED when folks have a good time just ENJOYING poetry!  You people are great, collectively, and individually...

Dopey, I do thank you - I know your schedule is awesomely tight, but that you made a moment to come, sit back, and enjoy...well Sir, here's your lemonade...

Chris, I had searched for YEARS looking for the right photos to go with the feeling inside, and finally Titia said "here they are..." and isn't she GREAT to have shared???  Thank you!

Titia, indeed, I have always felt that this poem needed something a little extra, and leave it up to you, and Marge's back yard, to provide just the oomph this poem needed!  Thank you again for your wonderful generosity!

Marti, if the poem and the pics gave you chills, then the whole effort was well worth it!  Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful words!

Linda!  Shhh!!!!  We NEVER ask the muse how it's done!  We just appreciate that they linger long enough to share their thoughts!

Enchantress, you know what?  I could almost hear that OHMYGOSH! as if I had heard it before!  Yes, my dear, Spanish moss is like seaweed in trees, only it's very delicate, and very deadly...

Nan...for you to use the word Masterpiece, which is not one you use lightly...or often, fills me with Sunshiney glee!

Noah, now there's a whole other poem in your comments, you know...something about cobwebs and a clear head...I think you have something in that, so get with it!  Hugs my friend...

Auguste, it is a dream to visit all of your cities and historical areas, and get back behind the scenes and go searching through the graveyards, and bury my fingers into the deep moss of time...

Scorpio...that it came to you on spectral planes...why, that is all I can ask!  Thank you for reading!...

FFF, thank you so much for bumping this up...I am glad you unearthed my little treasure...

LJA where the heck you been keeping yourself, anyway?  'Bout time you got your self in here and start protecting your dignity and what's left of it...and thank you, good Sir, for your kind comments...

Martie, you don't miss anything...you get to things, soon...

Ethel, it is not yet time for you to say you've missed things...you have not been here quite that long, yet!  I do appreciate the many times you have read my poems and have taken time to leave behind your comments and thoughts...I hope that you will continue to enjoy the many poets and their varied offerings here at Passions!

Karilea, This has to be one of my all time favorites of your poems. I cannot imagine the amount of time it must take to do the research alone. And, then to write the poetry to go with the data is quite amazing.  I think you have outdone yourself with this one. Thank you for sharing your talent with us. I enjoyed this a great deal.

Warmly,
Pat

Amigo, thank you for reading.  Mixing history, with fact, sometimes fiction, and working toward something that will haunt a reader, for whatever reason, is part of the mystery of poetry, yes?

Yes, Mysteria, for someone who is green with envy on the talents of my fellow poets, you surely hit the nail on it's coppered head...

green indeed!  Thank you!

Toe, a "good job" from you is worth it's weight in your Toe, alone!  Thank you!

Oh Pat, I certainly hope I have not outdone myself.  I still have so far to go!  Thank you!
