The Other River Once each year my nature transports. Oregon climate changes as abruptly as its geography, the west being green and moist, conducive to controlled, thoughtful agriculture, while east of the Cascade Mountains the abandon of high desert predominates. In the mix, the traveler, or, in my case, the camper experiences a titillating confusion. Highway 26, after examining the shoulders of Mount Hood, plunges in a glance, to wild vistas of luscious grass aching for a breeze. Within minutes the heat of the Warm Springs Reservation forces down the window. Sleeves push up, and when I unbutton my shirt I am instantly convinced of being the hood intake of a rebuilt '57 Chevy. I gulp air, swallowing the taste of sage as if it were Pepsi. Everything accelerates, reminding me that all the time I took squeezing gear into the back of my pickup could have been spent packing a toothbrush and nothing else. In no time I am there, beside the Metolius. RMW |

Thus will always the western climes be the savage difference of raw, and rare and fine, and good. |

Bob Next year you will remember that all you need is your toothbrush...but don't forget to pack your fishing pole. Enjoyed! |
