~* The Christmas Shadow *~

I silently waited and waited,
Until there wasn’t a single sound.
No risk taking this special night,
I couldn’t be seen, heard or found.

I just stood still as a statue and listened.
My family were snug in their beds,
While visions of magical Christmas things
Merrily danced around in their heads.

I got part way down the stairs,
Covered my mouth in fright.
A big shadow was behind our tree,
Now he stood there in plain sight.

Out from behind our Christmas tree,
Santa appeared and winked at me.
He beckoned me come down the stairs.
I wondered how this could really be?

I was so happy to know it was Santa Claus,
And not a burglar standing there.
He helped himself to one of Mom’s cookies,
Then nestled down into Dad’s chair.

He was so round and jolly,
Laughing and winking at me,
He began taking presents from his sack
And placing them under our tree.

I said, “Oh Santa, please don’t go.”
“Do you want to have some real fun?”
“C’mon, I do this every single year,
I move all Mom’s place cards one by one.”

“See, Mom keeps putting Aunt Tess
In the chair right next to me,
She talks, and talks all darn night
Telling me what a good girl I should be.”

I took Santa's hand, lead him to the table,
All set with the stuff you don’t touch.
A place card was above every single plate
The good ones, from Mom’s china hutch.

Laughing, he and I moved them all around,
It didn’t really matter who went where.
All I cared about was when it came to me
Aunt Tess would not be sitting there!

Then Santa said, “I have work to do,
Honey, you better get upstairs to bed.”
He walked over to the fireplace,
He seemed to disappear, but he said,

“I had lots of fun moving the place cards,
I'll be back next year, don’t you fear,
Merry Christmas to you dear young lady,
And to your family, a very good year!

Well Santa and I did this every year,
Until one Christmas he never came.
The cookies and milk sat untouched.
Sadly, he must have tired of our game.

But at that particular dinner,
Dad bent over and whispered to me,
“So, you don’t like your Aunt Tess too well?
What a shame, she loves you so much you see.”

My Dad told me many years later,
He had been Santa and that shadow.
We laughed, hugged, and then he said,
“I thought one day you ought to know.”

I didn’t want to burst his bubble that day,
So I just went along with the flow.
See, I knew it was Dad all the time,
But it got rid of Aunt Tess, that's all I know!

~* Merry Christmas Everyone *~
