"A frightful fiend doth close
behind him tread"
                  - Coleridge

All too mortal moments
assign a human hour

Apparitions rattle around
the psyche as those inherent
haunting ancient castles

These aren't shed by moving,
resist cognizant exorcism.

Such spectars surge,
shadowing us at will
and I fear detain us
in a tortuous eternity,
replaying at our
flickering finality,
threshing our last
labored breath.

It's the dead months of nothing
that define our winters,
when forests, disrobed,
reveal their naked truths,
the crooked leanings,
asymmetric imperfections,
stark trepidations and
frozen terror of all that's
common in the rise towards light.

Is it because you all lean
in the same direction like that
Russian forest from it's mysterious blast,
porcupine quills unmolested,
wind battered growth of those
seaside north Pacific trees,
that you claim chicane as life?

Would not our reach towards the Sun
been warmer had we spoken of it?

Do you not also wear
the char of Old Scratch
so obvious in our naked winter?

"Happy people have no history" - French Proverb

Darn it...everyone is pulling on the same
part, to say, "yes, I understand"...and even
if I did not, this would make me stop...
and stare.
