I remember,

Waking to the chiming
of the church bells
The sweet aroma of citrus
drifting through open
shutters
Vast orchards
of lemon,orange,fig
and almonds trees,
groves of olives
that lay beside
ancient pathways
that wound their way along
the mountainside
and threatened to reach
into the heavens

I remember,

The sound of horse
drawn carts along
the cobblestone
beside the rustic home
my grandfather built
Of mornings
in the town square where
old men sat and argued,
espressos in hand
of politics and life
Where the Trinacria
adorns the walls
on banners and tapestries
or is painted on festive carts
of red and gold

I remember,

A pristine beach of blue
skipping stones across
the Mediterranean
underneath a fiery sun
Diving into the waves
and swimming out
to the old wooden
fishing boats anchored there
At night beside the sea
we'd walk and
marvel how the moon
and stars so brightly lit,
shimmered off its surface
in a mirror of the universe,
and were humbled

And I remember,

Our tearful parting
Etna's smoke
reached up into the skies,
as we flew overhead,
a last wave goodbye
reminding me to return
to a land where time
seemingly stands still
in simple days and simple ways
Though her name is tarnished
by a letter as scarlet
as the blood it has spilt
no stereotype can ever
mar the beauty of my
beloved island in the sun

Calamari, fried fast in very hot Olive oil
Sea-salt and a hint of Nutmeg.

You've brought a nice taste to this.

Very accomplished write, Raph

I can well relate to having a similar taste of this island. I don't think it has gone away. Thank you.

Beautifully written, loved the imagery.

Thank you Salty but words fail in comparison

Ed, just about anything cooked in fresh virgin olive oil and seas salt is a gift from the gods. Thank you very much for the compliment.

Many thanks James

Thank you Robert i don't think it ever leaves.

Wow Ethel, you're way too kind! You've made my day.

Yes Dark Angel (Maree) you're right, I hope you do one day, just as I hope to visit you're lovely island/continent soon

Thank you Enchantress your writing has been a major inspiration to me in my short time here.
