~~~ *** ~~~
The fishermen of old St. John's,
They sailed the ocean blue,
Pulling in their nets of fish,
Cod, sole and flounder too.
Though their work was heavy,
They didn't seem to care,
Singing old sea shanties
As they breathed the salty air.
"Heave ho, out we go
With the morning tide,
To face another day at sea,
The groom and his bride."
Then suddenly the sky grew dark
And a gusty gale blew,
The churning ocean sank their ship
And she lost all her crew.
The wailing sobs of the families
Could be heard along the shore,
The sea had claimed a victory
And they'd see their men no more.
For years the men had braved the sea,
It was their way of life,
To be at one with the mighty brine,
Laments each mournful wife.
The sons of sons now harvest the sea,
As their fathers did before,
Singing the song of fishermen,
'Twas thus and ever more.
"Heave ho, out we go,
With the morning tide,
To face another day at sea,
The groom and his bride."
Yes and so it ever is. The men who fight the sea and often lose the battle. Great poem Linda
(big huggssssssss) Oh Linda, In can't help but cry when I hear so many of these fisherman's tales as it truly is a tragedy hearing of stories like that and of Clarentine and the 49'ers and others who lose lives! (sigh) This is very well told, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Linda, thank you for sharing!
May love and light always shine upon you!
Love,
Noah Eaton
I live by the sea and have heard many true stories that are quite similar to your own tale, which I really like, by the way.   Nice writing!
The stars will shine when I am gone,
the earth will turn on as before,
the gulls, still race along the shore,
the morning star, still kiss the dawn
Sweet Linda, you made something beautiful out of a sad story. I like that. You do have a way with words, talented lady. Thank you for sharing this story with us.
Loner ~
You are fortunate to live by a river as am I to live by a lake. When I was a little girl I lived in New Brunswick for a year. I love the ocean!
The St. John's that I am referring to is in Newfoundland.
WhiteRose ~
It breaks my heart whenever I hear of lives lost at sea. As you know, I also had a tragic loss--the disappearance of my sister's son Chad, along with 5 other boys, on Lake Ontario on March 17, 1995. They have never been found.
Thanks for paying your respects to those lost at sea!
It pleases me very much that you "love to read" my poems. It makes the writing of them all the more sweet knowing that someone like yourself appreciates them!
Funny thing is that while I was posting this poem, I was thinking about you and how you live by the ocean and might enjoy reading this!--And you did!
Thanx, sailor!
Ethel ~
It makes me happy to share my words with readers such as yourself who appreciate them.
This is actually a song/instrumental I wrote for the guitar and I have arranged it so that it reads more like a poem. As you read it, you may have picked up on the sing-songy element to it.
That you for such a thoughtful reply!
Linda
