Listening to every heart

Ten Years and One Day

Seems like yesterday, when that
phone call came, and you were out of pain,
but I still hear your voice, not so much a whisper
but more in the words that form my own
chords, and of course
you visit me in your green eyed wrinkles
in the morning’s mirror…

you were never a morning person, no never…
you didn’t even want to see breakfast looking
back at you,
so I’d morning with father,
with an every now and then
when we’d giggle loudly
over how he could make you talk
in your sleep…

ten years and one day ago, you left me
for him, and Him, and
even though I have a brother
and a sister,
I thought then
We’re orphans,

even though just when a child loses a mother
or a father, they are not really,
unless they are very young…

what is it about parenthood and childhood
that they intermingle so well,
and a brief morning sky
can whisk you back and forth between
adult and child

when you look over, wanting to take a hand
whether you reach down
or up,
you just want that hand to hold on to,
one more time
and say

“Look!  See!”

and smile up or down into the face of the one
God gave you…
no mistakes there…

so as I look back on my morning
seeing the fountain
trying hard to tap into the sky
with tears falling up,
I realize that I had waited to see
if the first day after ten years
would be any different.

Nope.

I only miss you more.

Dearest Karilea - it doesn't matter what amount of time has passed, we miss our parents as if they left us yesterday. This is a beautiful, heartfelt write. understanding hugs to you, Chris

the sad beauty of morning mixed with bittersweet memory. damn, now i'm gushing. you are remarkable in form, but the raw emotion you put into your free verse, and this peice in particular, really stands me on my head.

my thanks for the share, and everlasting condolances.

Karilea... this piece is so touching that I have tears in my eyes...
I don't think anyone ever forgets the way their parents loved them... and I don't think we ever get over losing them either
~ many loving hugs

Oh so very lovely and caring Karilea, and how I envy those who can write of such beauty in the sky reminding them of their parents, as some lived in the eye of the storm.

Karilea, this also brought tears to my eyes.
Even though I still have both my parents, I
know if they leave this world before I do, I
will miss them as long as I do live. I'm very
close to my parents and I hate the thought of
losing either one of them.
Thank you, Karilea, for sharing your heart in this poem.

I lost mine when I was ten, and though that was almost 23 years ago, it does seem like yesterday sometimes.
